Persistence and an attack on several fronts is the answer with weeds, but bramble, couch and well established nettle can take some shifting.
I have been using generic, agricultural strength glyphosate for areas where I just want to blast everything, and the more expensive Grazon 90 for places among grass. I stick an activator, like Atak, in the glyphosate and use a coloured indicator to avoid overspraying and waste.
A year on and I've largely eradicated docks in the pasture
, and thistles are controlled, but in the garden among 'valuable' plants, it's a different story. While there might be no top growth to speak of,in the case of nettle and bramble, the roots are still down there:mad:, but I've bought time before digging them out.
My biggest problem is the weed seed bank in the soil. If I get an area clear, it is only a couple of weeks before it's covered in about ten different species of weed, including introductions, like Shoo-fly plant, St Mary's Thistle (the wonderfully named Silybum marianum!) and Evening Primrose. To think I used to actually sell those three. Ah well, what goes around....:o
Lir, have you considered a wheeled brushcutter like the DR?

or even a two wheeled tractor?0 -

Not yet: $$$$.
Thats good to get rid of docks in one year! We have docks and some thistle. out there. we've ummed and ahhed over spraying. If it were not previously organic I wouldn't be fussed in the pasture, but seems a shame to take us backwards 3 years in that. All land surrounding is organic too....so if we do spray it will probably become at least a two yearly job...as other people's weeds blow back on to us. Pasture, apart from one bit, isn't the worst it the other bits really....
Do you remember the deatils of our place? The weedy pondy bit is VERY visable on google earth!0 -
