How about the Heart of Wales line from Shrewsbury to Swansea? Get on at the crack of dawn & you could be eating your brekkie in Swansea:
http://www.heart-of-wales.co.uk/
Lots to do along the route, including the Bog Snorkeling Triathlon in July at Llanwyrtd Wells:

There is a series of great minds stuff happening here. I've been looking at Wales, Beaumauris, Caernarfon, Rhyl has a sky tower I see, Betws-y-coed, Portmeirioin and the like...:)It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Theme parks, then go on the scariest rollercoaster ride
great fun and always memorable.0 -

Yeah, but which theme park?
Also, the 1 downside to such a suggestion is that my time off is during school holidays...:( queues...It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Presume alton towers is near you?
ah..school holidays
go on a short one day course, we went on a mushroom hunting one last year and that was great fun (was only about £7). Plenty of short things at small nature reserves type things. Or go for a horse riding lesson (they're not actually that expensive).
Failing that, I could do with a strapping lad to tackle a 6ft x 6ft patch of nettles that are 6ft hight0 -

A few ideas lj
If you can manage to get a cheap room for the night, the Travelodge at Eastbourne on the seafront is ok if you can get a seafront room, very MSE (we got ours for £9, they are £19 though now, still good value), walk on Beachy Head, visit Battle, visit the amazing deco pavilion at Westcliff on Sea, go to Brighton...
New Forest is lovely, you can visit Beaulieu on the way through as well as pop down to Poole and see how the rich people live.
North Norfolk coast around Wells Next The Sea and inland, along the coast and in to the broads is lovely.
Harrogate and the Yorkshire dales to the north of Leeds are stunning.
Caernarvon castle is so imposing and its beautiful. I love that part of North Wales.
Travel through the Cotswolds and have lunch in Broadway - something that can be done in a day out. Maybe go as far as Oxford and take an open top bus around the colleges. Sit on the top deck and you can see over the walls. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

Viva I've been thinking for some time about visiting Battle!:T That sounds a good idea.
I'm off for the evening. I'll leave this subject in the capable hands of all you intellectuals...

Street/Clarke's Shopping Village in the morning.
The Bear public house (10 steps outside of Clarks) for lunch.
Afternoon of Wooky Hole and Cheddar Gorge.
Then Weston for an ice-cream and stroll along the newly opened pier (due to open any day now I think)
Or, the MSE version drops the pub lunch and you have a pack up lunch in Wooky Hole car park picnic area instead.

The Barmaid's Brain sounds really quirky and fun. Musicophilia sounds interesting, though I've had a copy of "The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat" on my bookshelf for sometime and its still looking sadly unread. This is my current (not very highbrow at all) read:
