friend bought fridge freezer over 10 years ago and freezer on top of fridge. when you put things in freezer they freeze & fridge seems quite cold so seems no problem with fridge freezer- dial set correctly. water at bottom of fridge by salad draw. she buy milk which is well within sell by date, opens milk (seems ok) and within a few hours it has gone off after being put in fridge. why? not bought from different shop. should she jusy buy new fridge?

buy one of those fridge thermometers and that will let you see if it is really keeping a low enough temperature.
Our old one teetered on the verge of 8 degrees for ages before we bought a new one. I dont recall the milk going off though. This hot weather wont help if its on its way out.

I've heard several people say recently that their milk has gone off, I suspect the supermarkets aren't being careful enough in this hot weather. It only needs for the milk to be left out of the fridge for a short time to shorten its life quite dramatically

One thing to bear in mind with milk is if you sniff it, it often smells 'off' because of the dried milk around the top. If you're unsure, the best way is to taste it (or get DH to!). Agree with culpeper though to get a 'fridge thermometer - the temp should be between 0-5 degrees celcius.

Yep - we've had milk go off quite quickly in this weather; it's the way it's stored in the shop and in transit.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

Best way as culpepper has said, you must check it's working correctly first.

Our milk is hardly lasting at all - I never thought about the time it's at the supermarket stored badly - genius!!!

Also worth noting that if you store milk in the door of the fridge it is slightly warmer than being on the shelf which won't help in this weather.

Also bear in mind that to get the best temperature from your fridge and freezer, not to fill your fridge too full so cool air can circulate and the opposite for the freezer.
