Tesco VS Sainsburys?

Hi All,

For some time now I've been an avid Tesco shopper - even though its not the closest supermarket (in fact, its probably furthest away), the Clubcard points attracted me.

I always steered clear of Sainsburys because I thought they were too expensive, and the Nectar points didn't match Clubcard points.

However, I have done some recent checking and realised that they both have more or less the same prices, and Sainsburys is a lot closer to me. The only thing that puts me off still is the value of Nectar points.

I would be interested in some feedback, and peoples opinions as to what they think is best!

No suggestions for ASDA though please.....I'd rather not .

All of the big supermarkets will have some things cheaper, and other more expensive, than their competitors.

The thing to do is find out which is cheapest for the things you buy.

Why not sign up for Sainsburys shopping and check the prices of the things you buy online?

Or pop into your local Sainsburys and have a look around. Take a list of the things you buy, or your last till receipt from Tesco to compare the prices.

If you write your shopping list on MySupermarket you can compare prices; usually whichever shop you start with works out cheapest so don't compare the total price compare oprices of individual items that you'd normally buy.

I think it depends more on what you buy rather than which supermarket you use. My tesco is slightly closer than sainsbury but tesco seem to have a strange layout so finding what I want never seems so easy. I've also got a local Morrisons and Asda and have tried these too. Adsa was the worst for finding what I wanted as they simply did not seem to have a lot of the things I like. For example Sainsburys usually have a nice selection of chutneys, with some less well known brands but Asda just seemed to have Sharwoods and nothing else as they seem to mainly stock "mass market" brands.

We bought all our Xmas dinner ingredients with Nectar points. Every time we go to the checkout now, there are vouchers printed for extra points or money off the next shop, too.
I find Sainsbury's own brand better quality than the other supermarkets and it's certainly no more expensive than the others, if not cheaper.

We use both but i do do prefer sainsburys. Just bear in mind sainsburys offers end on a tuesday night(depends how long its been offer for) and new ones start wednesday morning and tesco offers end sunday so i guess the new ones start on monday

To be honest, I did put my shopping list into Sainsburys online shopping, which is where I found that some items are cheaper, and some are a few pence more expensive. This meant that the price of the list was the same as Tesco (or thereabouts). It is much closer which would save me petrol too, and it is a much nicer supermarket in my opinion! I was just wondering what everyone else thought...

Its just a shame that Nectar points don't hold the same value as Clubcard points.

check out the other thread on sainsburys basics which are in general better quality than tesco value, although it varies from item to item. If you can switch to a few basics that will help keep your shopping bill down - and you could always save a penny per £1 each shop in a jar, over 3 months this would equate to tesco points. They are rarely worth 4 times their value since suppliers put prices up when you use vouchers, or you could have got a deal for free by using another voucher (eg legoland free child etc). HTH

Most Tesco offers end Tuesday night as well. New ones start Wednesday morning. It is the weekend only offers that end on a Sunday.

I would concur with most of these previous posters. I like to shop at Sainsbury's even though it is further away than T's, which I use for extra milk and fresh things inbetween Sains shops.
Sains' own brand stuff is IMO better quality than T's. I use a lot of their Basics range and it's at least as good as T's regular brand, but cheaper (I've not enjoyed most of the value range that I've tried). I don't buy much pre-made stuff, and I find that raw foods - meat, fruit and veg, and dairy things can be bought cheaper from Sains than Tesco. While there will always be exceptions overall my bills have dropped since I started shopping at Sainsbury's.

Oh and I have a Mr T's credit card which I use for all my spending (and pay off in full each month), so I still get 1 point for every £2 spent in Sains as well as Nectar points, which evens out ok in my view.

I shop at tesco because it's closer, but prefer sainsburys for the selection and variety (except for fruit and veg which is not really the best at ours). The only other thing that puts me off shopping regularly at Sains is that we get a lot of points from tesco, which we change into days out, and I don't think nectar compares to it.
