AOL dial up

Hi there

Basically I am on AOL dial up and am therefore not on a contract.

To cut a long story short, it went wrong the other day, and despite various attempts to retrieve my lost dial up connection, I cannot get it back.

Therefore I just want to leave AOL dial up.

I have looked on the AOL website, and it says (as far as I can make out) that there is no minimum time I have to let them know that I wish to leave.

I have a direct debit with them at my bank.

Therefore;

(1) Should I put in writing to AOL of my intentions?

(2) Should I give some period of notice anyway?

(3) When should I cancel my direct debit with the bank? (which is due on the 12th of the month)

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but couldnt reinstall, so at the moment my AOl software is uninstalled anyway.

If you could help please, thank you.

p.s. bear with me if I dont reply back straightaway as I am having to use computer access at the local library

Not for me its not. Thats why I stuck with dial up for so long. Cannot be doing with all the hassle I hear about on these forums with all the broadband suppliers!

I wouldnt just stop the direct debit, thats why I want to check the proper way to do it. But again I dont fancy ringing them as (a) theres no proof of what Im doing and (b) I just find that dealing with such companies is a hassle.

If it's PAYG dial up, then no notice is required.
If it's on a contract, then probably one month.
Really time you moved to broadband, could cost you less than dial up.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Well, since you no longer appear to have dial up, you're going to have to make some arrangement if you want internet access. Mobile broadband? Why can you not get broadband-too far from the exchgange?
Not all bb suppliers are a hassle, but AOL certainly are. Select the right company and you would be fine.

    Thanks macman for your reply.

Think I will still put in writing then I know I have let them know. I will just use the library one for now. And you think I could cancel my direct debit straightaway? As I say its uninstalled now, I just wondered if somehow AOl would still be supplying me with a connection. Im probably being over cautious, I just want to make sure Im doing things right.

closed - reading the threads on this forum, people seem to always been having hassles with internet companies, and if you are on a contract, its a lot harder to sort seeing as you are 'stuck with them' for a time.

just looking on the thread people are being charged when they shouldnt be, not getting proper service, etc etc - thats what I class as 'hassle'!

So your dial up not working is not 'hassle'? You can get bb on 30 day contracts, you don't have to sign up for 12 or 18m.

sorry for not replying sooner, as I say having to use the library computer, then was poorly last couple of days.

yes macman dial up not working is hassle, but this is the first time its gone wrong where I couldn't fix it.

For what I use the internet for, I can use the library one for now, or my friends. Then I will look into other internet providers at my leisure.

I will send a letter just to cover myself.

thank you for your replies, i appreciate them.

p.s. you mention being able to get bb on 30 day contracts, could you tell me who you get that with please as I havn't heard of that. thanks

I mentioned this on another thread but I don't want to be accused of spamming.

Plusnet have a no contract option although you'll need to pay more up front.

Alternatively go to a broadband comparison site like, for example, this one.

    http://www.thinkbroadband.com/search/package/basic.html

And if you go to this site and tell them where your nearest telephone exchange is they'll be able to show you which internet providers you can get.

Zen also offer a 30 day contract (although their service is more expensive than Plusnet).
