:) Best way to get a great tradesman? Marry him!

Worst way to get a great tradesman? Marry him :)

The tale of the cobbler's children is so true - everyone else's jobs get done before your home and you live in a permanent building site!

Everyone has a member of family or a close friend who has had work carried out by reliable and decent workmen or women in our case :j
This way you know you are not going to get ripped off :T
  • Always ask if the tradesman is qualified.

They should ideally have a five year apprentiship completed & at least a city & guilds in the relevant trade they are working in.

Also - They should always give a written quote first & payment should never be made up front. Only after all work is complete & you are happy.

Actually most give estimates not quotes..
    Not Again
  • Try contacting your local Trading Standards Office. Most now have a list of approved tradesmen.
They've all been recommended and have been checked by the Police.
It's still a good idea to get 3 quotes to compare prices etc.
I used this scheme in Blackpool and it worked very well.

word of mouth/recommends are best. I don't advertise - don't need to. All work is via referrals/recommends etc.

Plus, its key to remember that you get what you pay for usually. I know very reputable tradesmen who have cut corners purely because the customer kicks them where it hurts - on price. Some customers price expectations are in the realms of the cowboys...so they invariably get cowboys because most reputable tradesmen will walk away from a silly price situation because its just not worth bothering with

I opened the Robert-Enterprise Ltd, Painter & Decorating deal, and tried to RATEDPEOPLE.COM curiosity. I paid a lot of money on offer to be the first (ridiculously cheap quote for the work I have done 3) within 3 minutes, Text message, and I got it back, thank you, but another company already sorted. So how is it? There is a possibility of 30 people pay 18Pound + Vat to be the first bid, of which one is not true, because 30 people to quote, who em know what a job issued in the hands, which is Quality, and does not fall off 2 -- 3 weeks later. I painted over almost the whole of Europe (the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, France) 18 years have seen a lot of things, but such a dishonest companies, never met. I thought I would have found a new home of England, I did (make perfect CSCS test) companies have opened, 3,000 pounds (all savings) put it, yet there is no work, there are some honest companies such as RATEDPEOPLE.com, I feel like the rest of life also been taken.
Keystone Solution and the other half. Insurance company repair the damage event. Simeon, the region's leader promised to run, trees, bushes, (so much work, you should Subcontractor) opened my company, we did the first work of course, ludicrously, everyone liked all that you call to wait 1 month or get a new job. (Note 9000 pounds was the amount of damage, which up to 4000 from solved)
Who will pay this off? The peoples

Hmmm... hope I'm wrong - call me over suspicious but we have had more than one brand new ( registered today )posters with their first and only ever posting in this thread praising certain "find a trade" type sites - While we don't want to discourage new posters to join in I really would value such recommendations from a lot more established MSE posters otherwise we might suspect that some sites were trying to get business for themselves.

Everyone has to make their first post at some time - if it wasn't in this thread then it would be in another one.

Just because I feel strongly enough about this subject to have bothered to register and offer some advice doesn't mean I am touting for work or the information is unreliable. Maybe next time I won't bother.

But it wasn't in another thread . It was in this thread . And no others . Read what I wrote. I said testimonials from longer established posters carry more weight. We've seen it all before in the "find cheap glasses" thread. Most are now deleted. Bother if you want but in a thread of this nature it still looks suspect.. . Others can draw what conclusions they want.

Does anybody else find it somewhat ironic that MSE Jenny ( a female ) has started a thread that relates to " Tradesmen? "

I have a very reliable female plumber.:)
