Great 'how to find decent tradesmen' hunt

  • Believe me there are just as many rogue customers as there are tradesmen :D Normally it starts at the beginning when they get you to quote for the work, they tend to hold information back about exactly what they want you to do. Then you arrive to the job that has been agreed and you find over the course of the job you are presented with a list of "can you just do jobs" which can range from fitting taps to taking away the customers own rubbish. Then you have the bounced cheques, withheld money for no good reason and the list goes on. The classic one for us at the momment is after a new boiler installation has been carried out, is to be asked if we have power flushed the heating system. The answer is alway no, unless they have asked for it and paid for it, it is not a freebie.
It's easy to have a dig at tradesmen, most work long and unsocial hours, most will make mistakes, plumbers will have leaks, painters will leave drips, carpenters will miscut joints, roofers will drop and break tiles, brickies will undercut a brick. Funny you never get to see all of Matt Alwrights mistakes, maybe he does everything right first time and there are no outtakes or maybe the tv licence payer has paid him to do the same film shot 10 times or maybe 40 we'll never know....

Surely in these days of condensing boilers EVERY sustem should be power flushed before a new boiler is fitted?
  • We've started using PropertyHeads to find tradesmen. It's great because you can actually see the tradesmen reviewed by people you know. So no more worrying about fake reviews. Also I understand it's free for tradesmen which means they won't get upset about you getting more than one quote for your job. Booked a tiler that had been reviewed by one of our neighbours - very happy with the work done.
