If it's sealed properly it shouldn't be a problem. If the seal is damaged I'd be sending it back anyway, irrespective if it came in a seperate carrier bag or not.

  • I would imagine they tend to buck their ideas up if you request refunds each time there's a problem.

  • I'm on the separate bags side. I always pack meat in a different bag to my other shopping which is why I refuse help at the till for assistance in packing.

The recommendation from Safefood is to pack raw meat seperately from other grocery items.

"Pack your food items carefully. Pack raw foods such as raw meat, poultry and seafood separately from ready to eat foods such as prepared salads and bakery products. You can ask the shop attendant to place raw foods in plastic bags to protect other foods from drips and leaks."

I am amazed at how many people on here are woefully ignorant of even basic hygeine.
If the basic standard of care fails at the packing stage where else is it falling down . One of the reasons i will never buy meat from a supermarket is it has the potential to pass through many hands before it gets to you , each time increasing risk of contamination .

Which part of basic hygiene is been broken? Everything is in sealed containers. How many layers of plastic would you like between the items?

I always pack my raw meat separate to the whole shop in case of leaks. I was quite annoyed recently when an internet order had blood seeping into my sugar

I agree with the OP that certain things should not be packed together, I'm surprised when sales assistants or a delivery packer have put bleach on top of raw foods and heavy things on top of my bread and I think that surely you would expect it to be packed in a less random manner and in a way that has little chance of compromising anyone's safety in terms of raw food or chemicals. Surely it is common sense?

OP, I'd complain personally, over the top to some, but not to you, that is what matters :)

As far as I'm aware supermarkets aren't allowed to put raw and cooked meats (packaged or otherwise) in the same area, they have to be separated. A few weeks ago in my local Somerfield there were bags of cooked meats in the chiller cabinets which the pre-packed raw meat is sold from. When I asked whether this was OK it was withdrawn from sale and the assistant responsible was immediately (but not nastily) informed that this was not allowed. So why is it Ok for them to pack them in the same bag?

You never know whether something has been leaked on, so it makes sense not to mix products up.

So I'm firmly on the separate bags side of the fence.

my tesco shop is always delivered with cooked meets etc in seperate crate to raw and raw meat/bleach is always in a carrier bag even though i have opted for no bags

I love my tesco shoppers, whoever they are - they do a far better job than I ever would, even when they sub they are better than me :j

on the rare occasion that a heavy item has been placed on top of stuff that squashes (like my Lemon cake this week) the driver has refunded the cost of the cake there and then and then not bothered to take it away

I have recently started having deliveries from OCADO and I have not had this issue. I have had the seal broken on a bottle of presse though and they refunded it within 10 mins (I sent them an email). Email them ocado@ocado.com I think and ask them what their policy is. It may well be that it is their policy to bag individually and it is a training issue with a newish member of staff! You never know until you approach them and my experience of customer service is fantastic.

I will say one thing though... I have been a member of this site for many years and I do find it sad that people can be quite hostile with some of their replies. I do think that if the OP is worried about something - and they are entitled to their opinion - they do not need hostility from other members. Personally I too would prefer my raw and cooked foods to be bagged separately... that is just a personal preference of mine.

Sometimes people on this site often ridicule others but really sometimes people just want a but of help and guidance...

Thank you for voicing that. I agree completely. Why do people go into attack mood just because they dont agree with somebody else's point of view? So unnecessary.
