Monster final gas bill from last supplier

A few years ago I also had a seriously big gas bill, way out of line with previous ones...it turned out to be a leak in the combi which I count myself lucky to have lived through really.
I would turn the heating off altogether and see how the meter reacts the first chance you get now the weather is better....or better still, have a safety check to be sure. Hello, my thoughts on this are that I agree, the first thing to do is turn the boiler right off and check if the gas meter is still going round - that will tell you if there's something else going on or if your boiler genuinely is using all that gas.
Secondly it sounds like you've fairly recently moved into this house, I would think about all the things about the new house that could make it less fuel efficient. Have you gone from a newer boiler to something older and clunkier. People on here have acheived quite significant savings by getting new boilers, so is it possible you've done the opposite? In a winter like the one we've just had insulation is going to make a more marked difference. As well as the big stuff like the roof and double glazing, think about the less obvious stuff - if you have a hot water tank, is that wrapped up well. If your last house was a combi or had a well insulated tank and this one has a bare tank you could be spending far more on keeping the water hot. Maybe you've gone from carpeted floors to stripped boards on a suspended floor or from curtained windows to blinds?0 -
If it's an old style meter then it might be 20+ years old. It might be a calibration issue, it sounds like you are being metered for more gas than you are using. If I were you I'd phone your gas people and say you think the meter is dodgy, they'll come and fit a new modern one for free.0

...they'll come and fit a new modern one for free.
Only if they agree they think the meter is dodgy.
Otherwise they'll charge for the replacement (typically about £70) which will only be refunded if the meter is tested and is proven to be faulty."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100
