which sim needed for 02 broadband discount?

Hi,
I recently switched to 02 Premium broadband, am not connected yet.
I want to get the 5pound per month discount with pay as you go.
Do I just need to order a free sim on the cashback site or do I need to take out a payg contract?
I know I have to top up by 10 every 3 months.

Any O2 PAYG but you may as well get cashback.
You need to call CS to get your new number associated with the BB account when you've got it. If you want to keep an old number you have to call that company and get a code (I forget what it's called) to pass on to O2 so they can change your SIM over to that number - it isn't instant though.0 -
Thanks kwikbreaks,
Is it probably quicker to get a new number then?0 -
When you get the SIM it has a number. You can ask your old provider for some sort of porting number which you'd give to O2 and they can then change their system so that your new sim has the number of the old one. I've never bothered so I'm not sure long that takes but I vaguely recall being told it took a few days when I asked once - maybe someone will see this and give better advice.
It really depends on how many contacts you have but a text to let them all know your new number will be quicker. As an aside don't be a plonker as I was once and forget to put your name on your "this is my new number" text0 -
Thanks for your help, Kwikbreaks. Much appreciated.
I'll try really hard not to be a plonker, but no guarantees!0 -

No such thing as a PAYG contract. Just get yourself an O2 SIM and port your number onto that. Or use the SIM in an old unlocked phone as a back up-you've only got to use £10 a quarter on it to get the discount.
You can register the number at any time after you've signed up for broadband. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
One thing I forgot to mention which you should be aware of if just getting a SIM is that it has to be activated so you'll need to have an unlocked or O2 locked phone to use it in.5 Pay & Go Customers - Minimum Top-Up Requirement
5.1 If you’re a Pay & Go customer and sign-up to a discounted O2 Home Broadband package you need to keep your O2 Pay & Go mobile active (i.e. able to make and receive calls) and satisfy a minimum top-up requirement to keep the discount after your first month of O2 Home Broadband.
5.2 The details of the minimum top-up requirements are:
The O2 Pay & Go mobile used to qualify for the discounted Home Broadband is topped-up by a total at least £10 in the three month period prior to each month’s Home Broadband top-up date (this will always be 3 days before your broadband bill date). This means that if you are due to receive your Home Broadband bill on 4th of each month, then you must make sure your Pay & Go mobile is topped up a total of at least £10 in the three months prior to the 1st of each month (your Home Broadband Top Up Date)
5.3 If you are unable to meet this top-up requirement you will be charged the standard price for your selected Broadband package. If you subsequently fulfil the top up requirements, you will be entitled to receive the discount again for the months in which you meet the top up requirement, but it will not be applied retrospectively to the months where you did not meet the top up requirement. O2 will use its reasonable endeavours to ensure you automatically receive the Home Broadband discount when applicable.
5.4 If you’re an O2 Pay & Go customer and Pay & Go mobile is terminated for any reason or if you port to another mobile provider, you are no longer eligible for the Home Broadband discount and will automatically be charged the standard price for your O2 Home Broadband Package from the date of termination of your Pay & Go mobile or porting to another mobile provider.0 -
Quidco will pay you £1 to take an o2 PAYG SIM off them!
Once you have the o2 PAYG SIM you need to:
a) Top it up by 3 days before the first o2 home BB bill you want discounted. So my o2 home BB bill is 20th, so must put £10 on it by 17th to get the £5 discount on the bill raised on the 20th (and then the 2 next bills too as £10 top-up within 3 months of them too!) HOWEVER we know that during your first month with o2 home BB (ie when they would have charged you the full/normal price, ie without an o2 mobile discount) they will retrospectively give you the discount!
b) Get it associated with your home broadband a/c for discount purposes by phoning o2.
c) Later on if you want you could migrate your old/non-o2 mobile # onto the o2 PAYG SIM (replacing the o2 # with your old/non-o2 mobile #).
d) If so MAKE SURE YOU TELL o2 home BB you've done it as their discount system doesn't quite work it out properly.
(Can you tell the voice of experience lol )
An o2 PAYG SIM does NOT have to be topped up £10 every month; and whenever you do a top-up (ie £10 every 3 months for home BB discount) you can get various other perks/deals - here's an old posting I did in Jan 09 but the concepts all still apply:

Thanks to all you guys for your help!
I now know exactly what to do thanks to you. Have ordered my sim, takes up to 14 days to arrive, so should be in plenty of time.
Get my broadband this Sunday, all being well. Fingers crossed all goes smoothly.
Thanks again!:beer:0
