    Two major stumbling blocks.

You must accept returns within 7 days.

So customer gets a nice new laptop in a sealed box, has a play with it and sends it back, I have to give full refund. How much has that product been devalued by? £100? It's now secondhand.

Receipt of payment is only by paypoo. Customer can pay by credit/debit card but that will be transferred to paypoo by ebay and you will get payment from paypoo.

The second is annoying, especially if you have a merchant account and are paying fees of of 1 to 1.5% but the first point is the killer. There are too many nutters out there to be able to offer an "I've used it for a week and don't need it anymore, please give me a full refund please".

Yip I am with you on that one I used to work in retail for years and th number of people who try to return things because- the colour didnt go, they had changed their minds, etc was unreal or in one case they bought it for their gran who snuffed it ! .People ( bless them ) can be really weird buying sometime especally on ebay ( hence all the storys on here ) and the option of returning it with 7 days is like a gold mine. Yeah buy a cd - copy it return it. Buy a xbox game- play it return it.Even ebay chargebacks protects you from this. And then the item is no longer new so seller can no longer sell it on ebay express.
It should be called EBAY EXPRESS LENDING .:rotfl: EEL for short .

I have to agree! If I am going to pay "full" price for an item, I am not going to trust Ebay to deliver. I would rather go to Amazon or one of the other bigger shops that has more clout and reputation to deliver the goods without a lot of hassle or scamsters in waiting.

I buy from Ebay vendors because I know I can get a bargain and so does everyone else. It's worth the hassle because I know I am getting a cheap price, and that's what drives other shoppers to buy from Ebay.

I think Ebay needs to be careful that they don't snuff out their original concept by trying to re-brand themselves as an online retailer more than an auction site. This auction concept is what made them what they are today.

Is Ebay killing the hen that layed the golden egg?

The returns within seven days actually comes under the distance selling act. The customer has a legal right to return goods within seven working days. I think that they have to be unopened and unused though, but am willing to be corrected on that!

Edit: Just had a look at the Office of fair trading site. It states about the "cancellation of contract"
"the consumer must ensure that reasonable care is taken of any goods received"
So I think I have just corrected myself!

This is the way I see it too.

Once had a customer try and send something back after the 7 day "free trial" period....we are still fighting it out. The item was returned months later under a warranty claim having been submerged in water.

I totally agree with you, I would never use Ebay to purchase a new item of real value, it's just not worth the risk. I only buy items that are cheap or 'retro' items that you just can't get in the shops, anything else like electricals etc above a certain price and I want a 'proper' shop with a good reputation and a cast-iron guarantee. I'd only use Ebay Express for things like cheap ink cartridges, probably.

I don't think you have to be registered as a business, I am a power seller but registered as a private seller not a business and ebay still sent me an invitation for ebay express, but I too am not sure about the returns.
  • Another loophole is you send a new item to the buyer, who asks for a refund sends back a brick with a tracking number, PayPal will give them the money because they can prove they sent 'it' back, so you lose the item and the cash. Until eBay sorts out the rampant fraud it is never going to be a safe place to trade. It would be better if they put these resources into sorting out the problems rather than changing and new ideas every five minutes.

I can honestly say that I'm obviously using a completely different ebay then to you. Virtually all my buyers have been really good honest people and I've never had a chargeback or a brick in the post. I've met some great people by email, some of whom I still correspond with ocassionally.

If you have found ebay so problematic then you may well find a different venue will suit you better and I wish you well. For me, until there is any real competition I'll stay with ebay.
