If you can solder, you can also carry out some repairs yourself at home by buying a kit.

Alternatively there are lots more local repairers (many working from home) who will fit kits for you.

Satcure also have a list of local repairers, mainly for Thomson HD and Sky+ boxes.

Sadly, I am not allowed to post a link to it. It's the first part of their address followed by psu_fix.htm

Thanks to the OP, my husband has repaired our Sky+ HD Box with the Thomson Sky+ and Sky-HD mkII PSU capacitor upgrade kit RELKIT33js from Satcure.

Once he'd repaired ours, he then repaired my son's discarded box by removing the relevant capacitors from circuit boards he had in the garage. Circuit boards that he'd removed from various electrical machines that we had come to the end of their life.

I won't grumble at him again, the next time he dismantles something before recycling the bits he can't use.

That's commendable, in a way, but my understanding is that some capacitors in a satellite power supply have rather special ratings, and usage of the wrong type could cause early failure (including smoke).

Admittedly you have to know what you're doing - not a job for someone without the correct knowledge.
He's an expert with capacitors & everything electrical and would only use the correct ones.

Steve Middleton specialises in the Thomson DSI8215 HD box.

However, although he (obviously) gives his address, he only gives a mobile phone number and that might make some steer clear. Perusing his website appears to give him credulity though.

I've only ever had to buy one but a few minutes on ebay solved my problem.

    See HERE.
