Off to Ireland soon. Planning to pay £5 for an international bundle to cover calls etc but I certainly dont want to be using data at international rates.
Can you ask your provider (mines Orange) to disable this but still allow calls/texts etc?

you could just edit the access points to make them not valid, e.g. orange.x.x
on the other hand, some data use can be useful, for example if you use a service like Fishtext in lieu of roaming sms rates0 -

I just make sure that if i accidently use the internet, it asks for WiFi, rather than connecting. On mine (LG) I change the profile from 'pay monthly' to 'Wifi'.0

it seems to use about 1k per message
if it's a smartphone, particularly an iPhone, make sure there aren't applications that will use internet without you realising, and don't use for example Google Maps as that can get through a megabyte or two reasonably quickly0 -

Doesn't the iphone have a slider that defaults to roaming data off, and warns you in no uncertain terms it will be expensive if you choose to turn data on?0 -

It does
I have told you where to find it0
