    ^^ That's a bit rude!^^

The only sensible answer a bunch of strangers on an internet forum can give you is "it all depends"

And it all depends upon your individual circumstances: how tight your monthly budget is already and whether your mother is earning a wage/salary or not. Costs do increase when there's an additional member in the household and I'm sure your mother wouldn't want to be a burden if your budget is already stretched to the limit.

In similar circumstances, if for a shortish stay I'd be minded to only charge a notional amount to cover food and extras baths/showers. I've done this for members of my own family and close friends. In my experience longer-term is more problematic as in the past I've definitely had people outstaying their welcome when I've only charged them derisory amounts as it seems a sense of entitlement can creep in when you're not looking.

I have literally sent an email for mum, who is coming back from China, and will be staying with us, anything from 5wks to 3mths from late March .... until she either sells & and finds a new place to move into (currently on the market), or rents a new place for 6mths..... All depends what happens after the wedding in May and what work she finds.

She asked what are my likely living costs for the next 3 mths. So I have suggested, she buys 1/3 shopping loads £60-80, and the bits and pieces as required in the house. I also know that she will cook / wash up etc, which will be a nice treat.

Mind you I also quoted petrol prices too, as she's already put a depsoit on car over here :P

The question being asked was "How much to charge?" not "Should I charge?".

I think most people would much rather contribute towards costs, wouldn't feel right otherwise.
  • Besides, OP said "She wants to give us money towards bills etc..." rather than "I am insisting she pays..."

There is never any need to be rude.

I wouldn't charge my mum a bean. Theoretically speaking had MIL stayed with us I wouldn't have billed her either (she passed away a few years ago). If she decided to gives us a little help towards expenses then that'd be fine but I would insist that she didn't pay more than a token amount even though Mrs. Shoe and I aren't exactly rolling in it.
