I have tried over a hundred times to fix this now, with all the suggestions that appear. also by over-riding 'not recommended's to 'proceed to web page'.

If this was only one site I'd suggest it maybe was the site but as it is several it could well be that your machine has been compromised and you are being directed to websites other than those you think you are visiting but the hack isn't complete and the browser is still spotting the invalid certificates.

I'll leave this one to the resident virus gurus but they will certainly tell you to download and run malwarebytes then hijackthis. As the virus/hack/whatever is compromising your DNS that may not work though. Do you have any other machine that you could use to check the sites and download those from?

You must stop using that machine and get it off the Internet too immediately.

    What security do you have?

Install Firefox on the machine (keep off the Internet though -use a USB dongle) which should allow temporary access if you must have it www.firefox.com (choose NOT to import settings from IE).

You'll need to scan your machine for problem. Hard to say what you should do because you've posted nothing of any help whatsoever.

Get this on a USB too and then transfer it to the machine and install it www.microsoft.com/security_essentials

And if you have very personal or private files get them off the machine too.

How can i fix it if I don't use it and have nothing else> - I am at home.

    What security do you have?
Not sure what this means - have AVG and whatever is already in computer. Read mse for hel pon these things but don't understand jargon and abbreviations - have used advice from mse though for installing things. Nothing recently, BUT - did notice a msg about progs awaiting installation as I switched off yesterday, around 14h. Would that have done anything. They upload/update whether or not 'putah's on.

Install Firefox on the machine (keep off the Internet though -use a USB dongle) ????- what???which should allow temporary access if you must have it www.firefox.com (choose NOT to import settings from IE).-means nothing to me I'm afraid.

You'll need to scan your machine for problem. Hard to say what you should do because you've posted nothing of any help whatsoever - well, I tried. If I knew more, i wouldn't be asking for help now. I also took pic of a peculiar msg I've neever seen before when I returned last night and switched on again. It filled the screen but fora tiny border edging and was headed 'AN IMPORTANT CHOICE TO MAKE: YOUR BROWSER..etc.etc. .......Before proceeeding, please confirm that you are connected to the Internet.'
As far as i was concerned, that's what i was in the process of doing. it has been running very slowly for a month or two now, often throwing up, 'virtual memory low' box msg, and giving me lots of 'not responding...has to close...'etc.etc.

Get this on a USB too and then transfer it to the machine and install it www.microsoft.com/security_essentials - now, that's the one that seemed to start the problem yesterday. When I've gone to update it today, it just shows itself as completing, I click 'finish', then the update box appears for me to start again. This has happened half a dozen times in the last hour.
Despite the frustration evident in your help[which i do understand and appreciate] i have followed each set of instructions faithfully. The first set was about enabling cookies, following that update at 14h yesterday.. Perhaps you could suggest sth for this - their advice doesn't overcome the prob. so far, but I do not know whether or not I havew done things the right way.

And if you have very personal or private files get them off the machine too.
I have loads of things - that's what my computer is - i wouldn't know how to get them off the machine.
Thankyou for all your skilled input, but I need simple non-techie terminology...if you can be kindly over this, i would really appreciate your help.

I think I just saw your paddle float down the creek past me :(

The problem you face is that your one and only machine is probably infected in such a way that downloading the tools to fix it may not be possible. You could try a scan using whatever antivirus is already on your machine but as it obviously hasn't stopped the infection it has probably been disabled by the virus.

I think I can guess the answer but have to ask the question - do you have an up to date backup of the machine (operating system + your data) which you can restore by booting from a CD or DVD recovery disk. Failing that do you have a backup of your data plus whatever came with the machine to restore it to manufacturers defaults?

It would be possible to backup your data, restore the machine back to initial setup and then later restore the data but it requires some experience to do that and a boot CD which you virtually certainly don't have.

You may have to risk getting fleeced by a local computer shop. You'll have to stress the importance of recovering all your data from the disk before resetting it.

    Reset your PC's clock.

Basically because the time is wrong on your PC, the certificates aren't valid.

I hope you're right and can see how it could be that although I've never seen that one myself.

One thing that I did notice was mention of installing a new browser - that will be a Microsoft update to let you know that you can install alternate browsers. It is not an instruction to do so although I've seen an earlier post where someone interpreted it that way.

me too - I inadvertently did that just by using the PC clock as a calendar to check a day/date about 3 years earlier, and ended up reset to there

JOYOUS NEWS AND THANK YOU ALL -
[and I am upper case shouting with relief]
It was indeed a month error - showing August - how so, I shall never know as I haven't used the calender. Used the SayNoTo0870 site to find an Amazon freephone no, where - eventually - John[American in Cork]talked me through it all. Said it happens sometimes just by chance - needn't be any input by anyone.
Was just coming back to tell you all, only to discover the same suggestions from silo, jack and redux. I'm so happy now and really thank you.
    Happy day shalooshalay
    #########
This also explains what was looking like a 1-hour advance on this site - as indeed August will be...and gorgeous summer.
