Hi everyone,
I am currenlty trying to book a train to Newcastle from Gloucester leaving Friday 2nd May and returning 5th May. Looking on the net its gonna cost me £99.80 a ticket. Friends of mine booked a few months ago and have a ticket for the same dates, but only paid £45 each. Is it worth me waiting til the day to see if they are any cheaper at the train office? Or do i need to bite the bullet and pay up.
I have always found prices increase the later you book so it will be better to book as early as possible, unless you know or hear a promotion is coming up. For example virgin did a recent promo and I travelled first class from london to manchester for £17.50 thanks to vouchers in the daily mail. But for you, there's not much time left so I would book it. Also check other train operators site, sometimes the same route on the same train is cheaper on a competitors site0 -

That's a saver return - it will cost you exactly the same at the ticket office on the day.
It might be worth looking at split ticketing at say Birmingham.0 -

Almost as cheap would be to use Grand Central from London KX to Sunderland (£35 single per person, with railcard discounts if applicable), then get the Metro from Sunderland to Newcastle.0

Got sent this link today by First Scotrail - works on stations outside scotland too.

It is not railcard friendly like previous promotions. I think the previous loophole (A. Go to normal Scotrail site B. book tickets with railcard C. follow promotion link above and get extra discount) does not work as the discount is not applied to the whole basket, but to the actual fare when selected.
Book by 31st May0 -

The price it quotes for a full price ticket seems to differ from those usually displayed on other websites and at stations, so it may be worth checking the website of the train company you are travelling with to check the offer is the cheapest.
e.g.
National Express East Coast advance London-York single = £10
Same ticket using FirstScotRail offer = £11.25 - £1.10 (10%) = £10.15 :huh:0 -
