Sami, what's the difference between BSL and SLftD? I know that ASL and BSL are quite different in their styles (I'm always fascinated to watch the interpretor signing at church and have fancied taking some courses whenever I've got spare cash) but I didn't know that BSL wasn;t the preferred for deaf people? Confused now...
I'm afraid what I posted is about all I know on the subject, It stuck in my head because my mum said the teacher was obviously very passionate about it because he felt BSL was so basic it was insulting to the intelligence of all deaf people.

IIRC there is only one or 2 fishy jars, fish pie was the only thing I made specifically for Chris. I wouldn't normally make my own but I had to due to the lack of jars with it and the only thing I usually do with fish is steam it and have it with veg n chips or pasta

From my training as an NCT breastfeeding counsellor when we looked at the composition of breastmilk.. and also from the neonatal consultants at 3 different hospitals who recommend iron supplements for preterm babies that have not laid down the store of iron in the last few weeks of pregnancy and are being exclusively breastfed and are at much higher risk of presenting with anaemia before the age of 2 years (most commonly at around 8 months of age), in contrast to formula fed preterm infants who are not given iron supplements as there is enough provided in the formula milk.

Iron in breastmilk is more easily absorbed bt it is in much less quantities than in formula..
I didn't realise you were talking about preterm infants - that is a completely different matter.
It wasn't a dig at Feelie, I was more annoyed at the ridiculous article than anything else. I do find Kellymom utter trash, and it's not the first time Feelie has posted links too it and I'm like "!!!!!! GUBBINS"
I can understand why you were upset by it - the only reason I commented really was because it sounded a bit like you were mad with Feelie so I'm glad to hear that it wasn't meant that way.

Som - BSL isn't actually what most deaf people use, in fact a lot of deaf people find BSL insulting because you sign things like "I want ball" not I would like to play football. My mum and sister did sign language for the deaf a few years ago and the teacher (who is deaf) told them this info.
In true typical government fashion though they don't listen to the needs/wants of deaf people and encourage colleges to provide BSL courses over SLftD
I wonder what I learned then as I just always assumed it was BSL (because I didn't know there was more than one type of sign language) but it might not have been. One class I did was for people with deaf children (because they thought my brother might be) and the other was by a teacher in sixth form and one of the people in the class had a mum who was deaf and it was what she used. Was very confusing though as this teacher learned it in a different area so some of the colours were different.

I am fascinated. I did a dissertation on the application of BSL and its associated syntax for my English Language A-Level, studying with several groups of deaf people and all used BSL and no mention of any other sign language was ever made.

All my BSL lecturers were profoundly deaf, most of them with deaf families. I also attended deaf club at least once a week for over a year.

I wouldn't go as far as to say your statement is untrue. I would say it is unfounded in my (ample) experience :p

Oh Keely, I just thought of somewhere else... There's a shop called Blunts in Willenhall, they do discount clarks shoes, and they measure feet :)

Was going to say something else... Forgot now...

I should get over to the comp boards... Hubby's new plan... I'm procrastinating...

Oh yeah, I remember... If we're eating meat now Aimee always asks what the animal is... If we sit down with Pork chops it's always "Is this pig?"

Doesn't stop her eating it like...
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

as I say It was the word of 1 deaf person, maybe he's just got a thing against BSL. mfd sounds much more knowledgeable

Susan - colours is definitely a difference between the two, my mum gets confused sometimes because she has a child that uses makaton which has the 'other' signs to what she learnt, at school
