Kindof, I quit a few years ago, but OH quit when I got pregnant. He found it hard, but he didn't go back to it because, like Caz mentioned, I told him that he'd have to wash and change before holding the baby. Children whose parents smoke are twice as likely to smoke themselves - I found remembering that helped.

This page on babies and smoking is helpful:
    http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/smoking.html
The mention of cot death reminds me and OH why we don't smoke.

You know, I REALLY hate when you post links from that ridiculous website. It's utter bias tosh.

Babies and children who are exposed to cigarette smoke have a much higher incidence of pneumonia, asthma, ear infections, bronchitis, sinus infections, eye irritation, and croup. - HONESTLY, who would smoke and still blow the smoke in the childs face? Or are they going to catch an ear infection from absorbing nicotine from the parents fingertips?

Colic occurs more often in babies whose mothers or fathers smoke or if a breastfeeding mother smokes. Researchers believe that not only does the nicotine transferred into mother's milk upset baby but the passive smoke in the home acts as an irritant. Babies of smoking parents fuss more, and mothers who smoke may be less able to cope with a colicky baby (due to lower levels of prolactin). - How can they even PROVE that? Did they do a survey on all babies with smoking parents, and make a graph to show how often they cried? Rubbish.

Heavy smoking by breastfeeding moms occasionally causes symptoms in the breastfeeding baby such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. - Shouldn't BF if you smoke. Sorted.

Babies of smoking mothers and fathers have a seven times greater chance of dying from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). - Don't quite think it's 7 times, but I agree that there is a higher chance of it.

Children of smoking parents have two to three times more visits to the doctor, usually from respiratory infections or allergy-related illnesses. - Or maybe they just had asthma anyways? Keira has NEVER been to the doctor, but I guess that's just sheer dumb luck she has so far escaped my toxic death touch.

Children who are exposed to passive smoke in the home have lower blood levels of HDL, the good cholesterol that helps protect against coronary artery disease. - Is this taken from children's autopsys or something? Or do they just randomly blood test and have scans on all children with parents who smoke?

Children of smoking parents are more likely to become smokers themselves. - My parents smoking had nothing to do with my smoking. My other sister doesn't. It's a choice. What parent would give their kids a cig anyways?

A recent study found that growing up in a home in which two parents smoked could double the child's risk of lung cancer later in life. - Oh well so does eggs, pollution, not exercising enough, eating red vegetables and what other "facts" we are told. 1 in 3 get cancer anyways.

Feely, I know you have a strong BF ethic and all sorts, but I have to bite my tongue everytime you post. Do you realise how bad you make others feel? Well you certainly make me question my parenting skills because clearly I fed my child poison and am setting her up for a life of lung cancer and recurring ear infections.

How would you feel if I started posting links to bias websites about "BF IS WRONG, FORMULA ALL THE WAY" I'm sure YOU wouldn't like it.

Smoking is bad, I know that, I don't need to see links that have no substance at all.

BF is ace, I know that, doesn't mean I should have to feel like crap because I didn't do it.

I really think you need to chill out on the BF thing, some of your comments are hair raising, BF isn't the be all and end all, it is just FOOD.

Yes, FOOD! I admire the lengths you went too to BF your child but the stuff you come out with, like no advertising on formula or bottles is just like !!!!!!, does it really effect you at all? You have your own choices, so why does it concern you if someone chooses to FF?

I've said my piece. I'm away to go and have a cig out my kitchen window now, hope Keira doesn't catch the croup

MFD!!! Am I right that you are a BSL signer? Can you tell me how you would sign names? If you can.. Would you just use the first letter of a name or are there set signs for names?? Christophers SALT makes a tapping gesture with the first two fingers curled, but I don't know if thats for 'pay attention' or 'Christopher'?

    Hi Buttons.... :p:p

Did you watch that programme where the moms were letting their kids BF at ages 8 & 11.... eeeew! That's probably what some on here are like.... ;);)

As for smoking, my parents and grandparents have smoked around us for 30 years and i'm still as fit as a fiddle.... thinking about it, go back 20 years before the "PC Brigade" got a life and we never had any issues.... the world has gone PC mad, if you want to have a ciggie out the window/at the door then go for it - so long as you're not giving Keira a blowback then it does no harm at all....

If we listened to half the !!!!!! on TV and warnings around right now, it'd be unsafe to leave your house what with some of the idiotic things people whine about right now :mad::mad:

    That's a blokes perspective! :rotfl::rotfl:
    :o 2010 - year of the troll :o

BM, I'm not one to butt in (okay, so I am), but KellyMom AFAIK is quite well-respected website. It's not really for Feelie to defend or find scientific citations for the information posted on that website. Also, Kindof specifically asked for demotivators for smoking - it's not like she posted the link out of nowhere or to be preachy - she was specifically responding to a question that was asked.

/end - I'm not getting involved in another BFing debate, as I don't think we need one.

    Sexual Discrimination Warrant Officer online......:p

I think we need more men on here - EQUALITY!

I'm in favour of more daddies ... but if you're going to claim to be an officer we'll need to see your credentials. and your uniform, kthx.

OH is home from work and I think I may have fettled a way to do the course I need to do in the UK so I/we don't have to miss the Bermuda wedding :j I love New York but family's important (even though when I said I was sad to miss the BIL's 3rd wedding we both said at the same time ... But we'll go to the next one :rotfl:).

Edit: I agree Aless, on all counts. It's not a BF debate, Feelie was responding to a request for demotivating KOAG from smoking. I think the £1200+ she's saved only during her pregnancy could be incentive enough, personally.
