I advise against going to kwikfit as they're well known for doing unneeded work and are generally quite expensive. The test is free for a reason as they want to find things wrong and make their money. I recommend finding a good independent garage, can any friends or family recommend a good local garage?
If you don't have the car regularly serviced the most likely thing is that the pads have worn out. If the discs also need replacing, there's a chance it could have been avoided if the thickness had been checked as part of a service, or by you DIY.0 -
thanks, i am hoping that they wont rip of someone who works for the police. lol i just got the car in Nov as my 1st run around as im a new driver. what do you think the cost should be. the griding noise has just started. aw cars are expensive. trust this to happen when im off on holiday in 2 weeks also!!

The best thing to do is to phone round a few garages to get the best price - I find the back street places to be best but ask round a few people you know to see if anyone has any recommendations.
As already said, kwik fit are probably best avoided.0 -
I would advise against Kwik Fit, but any grinding from front brakes usually indicates pads down to the rivets, and the grinding is the rivets scoring the discs. This usually means the discs are scrap also, so I would budget for discs as well.
about £16 for pads and around £25 a side for discs + fitting
Check here for an idea of price:

You may find a local motor factor to be as cheap after you allow for postage, also Halfords are a little dear on certain parts, then get a small independent to fit them for you.0 -
Unless you have a nice uniform and a warrant card then maybe not....i am hoping that they wont rip of someone who works for the police.
Discs and pads aren't that difficult to fit DIY on most cars TBH, but am sure it can be unnerving for the average person to work on a safety critical car component.0 -
i think the other half mite have a look if kwik fit come back with a stupid costing to morrow. im hoping its going to go in my favor for once....
and my uniform is lovely0 -
pads £45 fitted discs £70 fitted or there abouts agree kwik fit are best avoided0

i would have hoped a member of our police departments would be more responsible than waiting until the brakes are making a grinding noise before getting them checked out.
do you not service your car?
if your pads are worn enough to cause a griding noise then under hard braking your brakes would fade causing the vehicle not to stop.
they may feel ok pottering around town but a hard emergency stop from speed won't be....work permit granted!0 -
The car isn't fit for the road if the brake pads really are that badly worn - it would never pass an MOT test. Why this has to be explained to someone who works for the police is even more alarming....."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Yep, left yourself wide open to that one, welcome to the home of the faultless,
:D
Everything youv'e read here is correct especially regarding KrookFit
Find a garage thats trusted and develop a relationship with them as you don't seem mechanically inclined yourself. Always best if you know the garage and they know you
. Can I have a get out of jail free card for that:j I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0
