BT ... can I get a mac if I owe on broadband

Hi
I have had a rough time with BT recently. They cut off my phone but reconnected when bill was paid one day late I had to pay a small fee. I was then told i'd be back on in 24hours... 3 days later still not. Called today to realise that my phone line will be back on but internet will not. They then went on to explain I have 2 accounts... and my broadband is also in arrears but I was totally unaware of this. Now I have a phone line but no internet until I pay my broadband arrears and then will have to take out another years contract. I have not been happy with them for ages.
Can I leave and get a phone line & internet somewhere else. What will I need off BT other than a mac key (is this what it is called). Are they obliged to provide it?
Who are another good provider?

Yes they still have to issue a MAC within 5 working days regardless of money owed. The MAC is for broadband only and if you bin the BT phone line and go with (say) TalkTalk no MAC is needed.
Obviously leaving them doesn't clear any past debt though or change any contractual obligations.0
