Rover 214 coolent fan eek!!

OK long story short my fans have packed up on my 214 rover cant afford to get it repaired straight away i am hopeing to offload the darn thing in 8wks as we have to upgrade to a 7 seater due to new baby on the way. My question is can i run the car for 2 short journies a day with out the fan or am i likely to completely fcuk the car up??

Journeys will be to and from school twice a day it is roughly two miles and buses arent an option i can drop the kids off early and pick them up later so i can avoid the traffic and have a straight run through and back again. For everything else i can manage without a car either by bus or walking.

You should be fine. Just watch the temperature gauge and pull over if it looks high. TBH I'd be surprised if the car would get warm enough to bring the fan on in a two mile drive from cold.

If it's not overheating, how does the op know the fans don't work?

If you get really stuck stick the heater on full blast, this will help cool things down.

It could just be that the thermo switch has packed in. These don't cost much and as a lazy temporary measure you could probably join the two wires together so the fan runs all the time.

I usually leave the engine running whilst waiting for the kids to come out of school and the fan will cut in two or three times during that period today the fans never cut in and i noticed the engine was getting really hot so i turned it off. Again on the way home the fans would normally kick in at least once but nothing infact they havent kicked in all day but never really noticed as i havent been stationary for very long. Just to check it wasnt me being blond when i got home i let the engine run for a while whilst on the drive and the fans didnt cut in again so they are deffinately arent working. as long as i am moving it seems to run fine and the engine stays cool i have made sure it is topped up with water and coolent and just wanted to know if i would do any damage doing those short journeys :-)

anewman i have though about doing that but i wouldnt have a clue what i was looking for and my OH is a bike man and doesnt have a clue about cars typical lol. I have had the heater on full and the windows open so the heat is drawn off the engine whilst on my way home :-)

I assume from the blonde jibe that you're female. In which case I congratulate you for noticing there is a temperature gauge, and that there is a fan that's now not working. Most other women will wait until it goes *bang* or steam bellows out from under the bonnet :D :rotfl:

Not quite what you said in the OP.;)

As you say, watch the coolant levels and don't run it when you don't have to.

I probably should have mentioned that but as i know the fans arent working just thought it was irrelavant how i knew sorry :-)

Im gonna see if i can beg a haines manual from someone and see if i can find the switch to wire it out.

Anewman yes i am female and i'm blonde but i know quite a bit about cars to a degree i just dont know the finer stuff like where the switches would be;-)

The radiator fan switch will be somewhere on the radiator. To test if it's likely to be the fan switch at fault you can unplug the connector and join the two connectors together. I would check the fuse for the fan first though so that's ruled out.

could be knackered thermostat not allowing proper water flow around radiator thus preventing fan switch to detect coolant temp
