Be warned: it is very hot and humid in August in Barcelona. I
lived there for 10 years and hated the month. Many locals resort to taking aspirin to stop their bodies aching, such is the misery of living in 90% humidity. Also, lots of restaurants and smaller shops close (Tancat per Vancances, as they say in Catalan), although much of the metro now has air-con on the trains, as do many of the buses, so it is nice to get around. There is a tourist bus, which will drop and pick you up at all the main tourist spots, you simply pay a fixed fee and can get on and off as many times as you like. Not expensive either!

I love the heat so I should be ok, I manage ok in hot countries during their summer, have a terrible aversion to even cool weather - i must be a reptile!!

Got a hostel when we went through www.rent4days.com if you do get one from them ask for a discount, I did and got one of the charges knocked off! Top service and very reasonable, they meet you at the apartment once you arrive and take you through everything. We stayed at the Stylish Loft Apartment on El Born which is very nice and quiet and well located but we warned no lift!!!
