Dissapointed...

Today was my big "bonus & pay letter" day and I'm really dissapointed. I was hoping it would help me get out of "debt" quicker.. I've put sooooo much effort in this year and it's really made me wonder why I bother!!!

The figures quoted were 3.5% for pay and 9% for bonus.. they said don't expect the full wack as the majority will be used to bring people up to there guideprice.

Now I'm 2k.. yes 2k under my guideprice and am signed off as fully competent in my job, so I was "hoping" for atleast 1k payrise min. Now that would be nearly 6.4% but that still is only 1/2 way. So what did I get.. 4.8%.. and I just feel really dissapointed. Now I'm not one to look a gifthorse in the mouth.. but I think I'm worth more.

So now i'm left inthe doldrums.. so do I put in a grievance (I'm a union member) or just got with it??? I don't want to rock the boat as I have managed to get them to pay for me to go on a CIPD course (which if I pass and qualify is a good reason for a better increase next time - a year away!!) with paid study days etc.

I just feel really cheated by it, I shouldn't as I did get more then my %'age worth, should I just be happy with that???

Sorry - it's horrible not to feel valued. Is there anyway you can find out what others have got? Might be that the suggested level was optimistic and noone has got close to that? (I know in my job that is usually the case  ) Can you talk to your line manager?

  • Not to be disrespectful or anything, but, If you look at the rate of inflation, you have just got an inflation busting pay rise there, which is more than most people get.

Us Civil Servants are severely restricted with pay rises, and I consider myself worth more than I got last year (2.1%). No exceptional bonus payment either.
    No courses paid for either.

So, I'd be really happy to swap pay deals with you this year.
Wha's like us - damn few, an' they're a' deid

Thanks for the reply guys, I know I'm lucky to be in this situation, but I have worked pretty darn hard for it!! I mean doing 50-60 hours o/t a month on top of my normal hours to make sure stuff gets done! (admittly I get paid the extra!)

I'm not on mega bucks (16k) and I understand what your saying about being more then inflation (I guess that's my 4.8-2.5 = 2.2??), but the thing is if they only ever get payrise to cover inflation when do I ever get a raise for being competent? I mean when I got the job in March 05 I had an promo payrise, and since then this is my only chance to "shine". Well I think I achieved that by getting signed off.. but to still be 1.5k below the guideprice what incentive should that be for me next year? If I'm lucky to get the same again it will take me another 2 years... 2 years to reach the guideprice for my job after doing it 3 years!! By then I'll be high skilled, low willed/motiviated and they wouldn't be getting the best out of me anyways. I mean I feel like just going in, doing my job and not bothering any more, cause they obviously didn't realise the effort I did actually make!!! (but then I guess they did hence the bonus)

Sorry to sounds like a spoilt brat! I'm not honest.. just this is holding up the REST of my life, the sooner my debt is paid, the sooner I can move out the family nest and get my own life!! I dunno maybe I got myself too swept up in it all!!!

As for knowing other peoples info I wouldn't want to ask, stuff that opens up a bigger can of worms! Everyone else seems really happy with what they got (unless it was for show!!) I doubt I was stitched up, just maybe my expectations too high as I know what was banking on it. Well I guess more motivation to get my CII and CPID courses done!! :D Who knows I have just applied for an internal dream job!! With a guideprice of 31k.. that's more like it!!!

Once again.. sorry to winge.. think I needed to get it out my system!!

i think you have a fair point i don't get paid a great wage either ...but only got 1.5 % pay rise this year ..yes you may have inflation busting pay rises ..but if you are still getiing paid alot less than you should that inflation busting pay rise still doesn't give you what your worth ..but what canyou do about it ...and that is where our employers have us ....i got a h.n.c in my work which is far more qualified than anyone else but still don't earn as much ...so i do understand where your coming from ..just wanted to lend my support ..good luck

Hi there... maybe harsh...but...you got yourself into the debt...and you can't be disappointed with your employer just because they didn't get you out of your debt quicker!!! Honestly...your very lucky to get a pay rise at all. I've worked for the government with only just bare inflation rate increases...for charities with very low wages...and no pay increase at all for three years...and now for my own business where I get paid less than I was paid 10 years ago...However...i've benefitted in lots of ways from all my jobs. Keep going, keep working hard, get the experience, get the qualification get a promotion, get another job...save more money to make up the difference you didn't get in your pay rise and you'll be out of debt before you know it! Good luck and sorry if I was a bit hard!!! Looneyleo

Yeah.. believe me I live well within my means now!! I don't expect my employee to get me out of debt, but I expect to be recognised for my efforts and I guess if I'm not happy, then I obviously don't think they have been??!! I guess instead of giving 110% at work.. I need to just give 100% and the other 10% getting me out of there, cause it's not paying off at the moment!! I just don't see the point of them setting a guideprice that isn't achiveable in a sensible timescale.

TBH I see the points of view, your not telling me anything I wasn't aware of or didn't know, but sometimes I just feel too bloodly understanding!!!

Anyways.. I feel abit better now.. clearing the whole thought process in my head.. well on the forum!!

Yeah..I know what you mean. It's not necessarily the money thing...it's more about recognition. I've been on all sides here...HR Manager, Boss, disgruntled employee etc. the biggest mistake your employer has made is telling you a guideprice...when they don't hit it...your demotivated whatever the reasons behind it. If you hadn't had that figure in your head you may not have been so disappointed. Don't give work 110%! get the balance right...give asmuch as you can but don't give too much that you feel you have invested everything with no return. Good luck...looneyleo

You could take it from thsi point to do your Job, not your boss`s or your firend in accounts, show what you do in your job only, if you are given a task you believe isnt for you by your manager advisin him you believe tyhat is there job, dont volenteer extra services but when time / will allow take a job you know you can complete well and with in dead line and give it all your worth. show you can do your job and achive results better than they expect from you in the next up run of the ladder.

As for the OT maybe knock that back a little or all together, your empolyeer may well be seeing it as Bob has cost us X salary plus ABC OT at time and a half or double and assuming your going to keep that up for the next year they will have a price that is probably above or beyond your guide price
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.
