conservatory heating

Extend your cental heating by fitting a double radiator in the conservatory. Who's gonna know? This must be the cheapest option for heating it during the winter months. Also fit good quality insulating underlay ( the silver stuff) under your flooring, this also acts as a damp proof layer, and splash out on good quality blinds, which of course will help keep the heat in too.
Hope this helps.
I have just had a conservatory built, 14' x 10' and am going to plumb in a radiator, but for time being we just use a small oil-filled radiator which is thermostatically controlled, and thats fine. (By the way, mine cost us £6000, has 'K' glass and includes 4 opening windows and a french door out into the garden, the glass has stained decorative panels which I was able to choose as well.)

My parents have got a Halogen heater, which they use all the time in the house... It costs hardly anything!!! And really heats up quickly!! We're going to get one when we move into a house with a conservatory in the next few months.0

I think your idea Malestrom was quite valid, why should you withdraw your suggestion, it was in fact only a suggestion and the more ideas the merrier.
Do you yourself have a conservatory robowen.
Yes Pat , I do.
I had one at our last house too and experienced problems with the underfloor heating - not fitted by me......I might add !. We never used it as it was rubbish and uncontrollable.
I have fitted numerous conservatories in the past, installed underfloor heating in different properties too...in different rooms. All the trade talked about problems with control.........or lack of it, in conservatories. If you ask me about other rooms....its ok, does the job and is more manageable inside the house where room temperatures don't fluctuate as rapidly as in a conservatory.
In my present life as a plumber, I get asked loads of questions about this same problem - I give the same advice. Don't use it.
I'm sorry if malestrom felt the need to spit his dummy out. Nobody asked him to withdraw his comments.
If you are going to recommend something, at least do it from your own experiences and not some sales pitch from companies trying to sell you the stuff. If only everything in life was as reliable...AS ME !!

What would you recommend then Robowen? We are having an extension which looks like a conservatory but has a roof with velux windows built. There are no doors from the extension to the kitchen. Our boiler wont manage another radiator. So many shoes, so little time....0

In your present life how many have you had.
The personal remark about spitting dummys out I think is quite uncalled for.
And no you didn't ask him/her to withdraw their comments, but the way you shredded every bit of advice they were trying to offer you shot down was definitely not very nice.
He was only offering ADVICE like everyone is entitled to.
We don't all come across like no it alls.
The object of the matter is that the OP has plenty of advice and information to decide what is best for them.0 -
I got a plumber out to move a radiator (where the door is going) and asked how much to get radiator into the conservatory and if it would heat it and if the boiler would cope. He said that it is an expensive job in my house (15 years old) because narrow pipes to the original radiator so would need to go up to the main pipe upstairs lifting floor boards to run an extension off for a new radiator. He said that he would not recommend doing that. Also it would not cope with the conservatory being quite large. I am reading everyones comments with interest and still weighing up the way to go. thanks to everyone who has contributed so far.

its still a conservatory Im a plasterer and do loads a year and nearly every one has a radiator. conservatories also dont come under the k glass rule because of the amount of glass in there, although it is a good idea to use it.0

Yay, someone liked my suggestion! Sorry small things amuse me :-) My parents are going to give myself and my partner one to help reduce our electric/gas bill. Theirs have halved since using them, and they're on Economy 7 which I thought was meant to be cheap anyway ?
