A Car For A New Driver

The chances of getting anything decent for £700 are pretty slim.
It depends on what sort of usage you are going to put it to.
If you are going to do low mileage and stay close to home a banger is not such a bad idea.
If you are going to do regular long journeys I'd be thinking of something a bit more expensive.0 -
As you're not too young, you might be able to get and insure something like a Vectra auto. Avoid the 1.8 though, its very thirsty as an auto. Have you had any insurance quotes yet? You need to really, to get an idea of what you can afford... You may be pleasantly or not so pleasantly surprised at the prices, I don't really know.0

I haven't got any insurance quotes yet because they always ask for the car details. I'd only be using it for getting around, the longest journey i'd do is prob 6 miles and the occassional hours drive to my mums once a month. I know my insurance will be very high.
Thanks to all the advice.0 -
Join one of the breakdown organisations (RAC/AA/etc). It won't seem like money wasted the first time something goes wrong when you are out.0

anewman has kindly given you a link to automatic cars for sale on ebay.]
You can do the same for your own area on ad trader or something. Just enter the price you want to pay and the key word automatic. You say you have seen a lot of autos for sale locally - where did you see those? Check out the same places/papers now that you are actually looking for one. Personally as I said, its not going to be a case of choosing a model, but of seeing what is available as an automatic.0 -
Why do you want an automatic? Are to taking you test in one? If so, You will seriously be limiting yourself, as you are only allowed to drive an automatic car. If you take your test in a manual, you can drive both once you pass.
Automatics are fine (drove one for five years, no complaints!) but they are less economical than manual transmission cars so do factor that into your requirements when buying
As already posted, ebay is your friend. I purchased my latest car from there about 5 weeks ago and i'm deligted.
Insurance? given that you have age on your side, I would expect to pay no more that £3-400 a year. My OH has been driving a year and her insurance is around the£370 mark and shes 30.
Hope this helps, and good luck!0 -

Yeah i'm learning in an automatic so can only drive them. I only have about 10 years of driving left anyway so an automatic will suit me. I may take some driving lessons in a manual and a test in a manual when I have some road experience but at the moment i wanted to learn as quickly as possible.0
