How does the young man fell about the publicity? Are they 18 or over?

He's 23. He's all for it, just embarrassed about his photo being in a magazine.

I had a story in a magazine once, no money involved but that wouldn't change my feelings. I hoped it would raise awareness and a bit of money for the disease concerned but I felt awful when it was published. They'd twisted details to make the story seem even more horribly tragic than it actually was and they'd made up quotes that were things I'd never say.

I think it may have raised about a tenner and certainly no awareness because there was no useful information in there for people who may have been concerned or about what signs to look out for etc. I regretted it.

How much do you need the money though? I would never judge anybody who was desperate for using what's available to them as long as nobody is hurt by it.

Have a good think about who reads the magazine, what the awareness is currently amongst the core readership and how much it would be raised.
He's 23 and the publicity could seriously affect his personal life.

I know someone who had their story published in a magazine; they bitterly regretted it. The storry had a slant they did not expect and veered dangerously away from the truth and they were generally mocked by all and sundry. Therefore, I would suggest you ask if you will get to proof read and edit the story before publication, if necessary.

I would do some research to find out what kind of stories make it into the magazine and how they are treated. For me, Prima magazine sets a very high standard - a short story told in a unsensational but sympathetic way with an information box giving readers follow-up links and telephone numbers. You can't get better than that.

Other magazines do not treat their subject so well.

Thats the problem, the magazine in question is a bit... well!

They had a story about cancer in it recently which was good and had an information box about how to check for that cancer and facts about it, so I would hope they would do the same with this story...

He could not have his face shown, and you don't have to use real names if he'd be embarassed. If it's for something important like cancer, then I'd do it, and give half the money to a local cancer charity/MacMillan hospice and the other half to have a holiday as you probably need one.

Speaking from a journo background, no editor would allow this.

But she choose to have her story published so the 'intrusion' was with her own permission, otherwise she wouldn't of had her story published.

Quite. The point of my post was that I didn't think the payment for the story was worth the intrusion but then again, I am not she. Fortunately. She lives in a very small town so even if she wasn't named and photographed (she was) everybody and their dog knows about her family life now. She became the object of some very nasty comments about her exploiting her unfortunate child.

I understand your concern, but I'm not sure why his life would be affected in an adverse way.

It's a story about his experience of cancer at such a young age, which I imagine most people would find inspiring and courageous.

At least I would. But then, there are plenty of weird folk out there who may have a go at him for benefitting financially. These are usually jealous people though, so I wouldn't pay attention to them.

I answered my own question. Nevermind Richard! lol
