Contacted by magazine

My husband and I have been contacted by a magazine to publish our story and raise awareness of cancer in young people. They've said they pay up to £1000 for their stories. Shall we do it? I've seen some stories in magazines and I just think 'why?' I don't want people to think we're money grabbers.

if you have a story to tell that may assist others then do it! If you are really concerned what ppl think re money why not give a % to a cancer charity that is connected to young people, but to be honest if they will pay for your story and it will help others i cant see any reason why you shouldnt treat yourselves with it. I can only assume you have been impacted by cancer either you or a family member? If so you deserve to get away and enjoy yourselves/rest/recouperate etc

You don't have to accept the money, you could give it to a charity of your choice.

  • To be honest I don't think earning £1k for any story could be described as "money-grabbing". My half-sister got paid for telling the story of her twin son's heartbreaking story about his congenital health problems and I think they paid her £500. I don't think it was compensation enough for the intrusion and everybody in town knowing her business but she's a single parent and he has special needs so I expect the money came in handy

But she choose to have her story published so the 'intrusion' was with her own permission, otherwise she wouldn't of had her story published.

  • If people have a story that raises awareness of an illness or charity or if they felt it could help others living with the same thing, then I can see why people do it. Stories such as 'I ran off with and married my mums boyfriend' are just tacky and yes I admit to thinking why would you do that in the first place nevermind getting it published!!!

Your story would raise so much awareness for childhood cancer and if you are confident and want to tell it I think you should go for it. If you don't want the money there are some brilliant kids cancer charities out there who would appreciate a donation if you wanted to do that.

if you have been contacted by the magazine - is your story out there already? how did they hear of you? was it through local press? sounds as if the story is remarkable and worth more than 1k! negotiate - bet you if they really want the story then your favourite charity could benefit by as much as 5k. or, you can decide on keeping your privacy and refuse. either way its up to you.

It depends on what sort of magazine it is - if it's something like Take a Break (sorry, don't read mags so this is the only example I know!) then it's not exactly an upmarket story that they are going to portray of you.
  • Thanks for the replies. I think we will go for it, if it raises awareness and makes more young men check themselves and go to the doctors, then its worth it.

you really shouldnt worry about what people think of you,
especially people you will never meet, see or hear from...

it sounds like you might have judged people in the stories you have read quite harshly and you dont want to be thought of the same... well, theres absolutely nothing you can do about other peoples opinions of you!
you must have spent enough time on this forum now to realise there are some real wackos about who will think badly of you no matter what you do so
try not to let it worry you while your out spending your money on a fabulous and well deserved treat for you and your husband!!

How does the young man fell about the publicity? Are they 18 or over?
