I somehow doubt the garage will offer a Courtesy Car in future.;)

you have to be over 21 I believe to drive vehicles on courtesy car insurance and some policies at least 25....

A lot of insurance policies include courtesy cars anyway so you wouldn't need to be on the garage's insurance, for example mine says

"Any vehicle provided by a licensed Motor Trader or qualified Motor Engineer in the course of servicing, repairing or performing a MOT test on the vehicle named above"

Problems with MOT is that they only check the car at the time.... so if anythings gone wrong since then with the mechanicals of it it's still technically legal.
In terms of the law though it is the driver's responsibility to ensure the vehicle is taxed, insured, MOT'd and roadworthy. When the police pull the car over, it's the person in the driving seat who gets the flak. If the driver can't take responsibility of the road-worthiness of the car they are driving then who should?! This is part of why the show me tell me components of the driving test were introduced.

Thrash the living daylights out of it- it's what courtesy cars are for. Find a Sainsburys carpark and do some doh-nuts.

Yes, but you'd need to know the specifics of your own policy to know if your own insurance covers it or not.

I knew this would get mentioned at some point... correct, still a bit of a crapper though. If you're in a situation where the garage had lost or couldn't find their MOT, the it's up to the driver to either drive it or not...

Bit gay, but it's the reason why people get screwed over when the law comes into play

    I wouldn't need a courtesy car anyway, VW's are reliable :D
