Maybe people are enticed in by the smell of sweat emitted from long-haired, leather trench coat wearing, overweight men in their late-twenties and early thirties who still think it's okay to buy models of Hell Boy and the Deathstar to display in their bedroom, which is obviously still situated at their parent's house.

    That's a bit harsh.

I love the whole long hair thing on men.

Rarely have I seen such vitriol directed at a company, certainly doesn't sound like they are loved like Woolworths (although we never bought anything in there either). I did visit one of these places recently, don't know if it was Game or not, it just sold computer games and stuff. It was amazing, I felt completely old and out of it. Young people (don't you just hate them), buying young people's stuff which only they know about. I was after a game which apparently was like so out of date they had barely heard of it, and they might have secondhand, but they didn't.

Dunno if there's much "vitriol", just people pointing out that selling games on the internet and seems to be much cheaper, and Game doesn't seem to have coped well with that from what I can see. I wouldn't buy a game from a high street store for £30 when I can get it delivered for free from play.com for £25, or generally always have a choice of getting it second hand on eBay for £20.

I think Woolies evokes childhood memories for a couple of generations what with the pick n mix and everything, hence a bit more distress when it went under. If Game went under you can't hear people saying "ahhh, remember those golden, hazy summer days of 2006 when you bought Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation 2? Oh, the memories that brings back..." ;)

I'm sure the workers in Game are lovely, I'm half-joking. Although a lot of them do seem to live up to the sterotype you imagine them to be.

I left feeling thoroughly old and depressed.

    I was useless at Lemmings.

I had an Atari St once and I adored it.

I also once owned every original Infocom game. I had trawled the entire internet for them.

When I ran away from home I grabbed the brat and forgot to take the games.

You have no idea how much that still rankles.

    I loved those boxes

I never had an Atari. My games console history:

ZX Spectrum (aged about 6 or 7. Used to play space invaders with my Dad)
Amiga 500 (Stock Car Racer and Lotus Turbo Challenge 2. Brilliant. Spent a lot of time on this thing)
Sega Megadrive (aged about 10 or 11. Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat were faves)
Playstation 2 (a join purchase with housemates at Uni. Even now it probably represents the most savy financial purchase I ever made)
Nintendo Wii (was never really in to this and never got played, so we sold it)
Xbox 360 (came free with a new mobile phone, again it got sold)
Playstation 3 (what we own now. Don't play it that much, but is great as a blu-ray, DVD, iplayer etc.)

I find the trouble with modern games is that you have to devote hours of your life to understanding what the hell is going on. I like driving games and games where you pick up a gun and shoot things. Something I can pick up for an hour, enjoy, then not touch again for a few weeks.

I've bought a couple of PS3 games that I think I could devote 20 hours a week to and still not fully understand what to do. I bought Tom Clancy Somethingorother and the instruction manual was akin to what I imagine the NASA space shuttle instruction manual looking like.

"Page 423: you have access to multi-play grenade units. This can only be used in desert terrain, and during even number ambush missions whilst playing in 'green mode' (see page 210-235 on ambush missions in green mode). To activate grenade units, press x, then y, then R1 and swirl the left pad around four times clockwise. Make sure you also press up nine times. You will also need to exit safe mode (see page 675 for the section on the 20 play modes available). Grenade units can be used in conjunction with the A56GT team mode, but only when red is pressed. Obviously you need to keep 'down' pressed throughout the above".

By the time I've read this, someone has crept up behind me and shot me in the back of the head. Then I turn it off and come back to posting cr*p on here.

I do adventure games in a huge way.

I can't play anything where you need a fast reaction time. I need to go away, smoke a fag and think about things.

Let's not forget that they bough Electronics Boutique some years back. They consolidated specialist video game stores just before the internet took off as a retail avenue...
