Virgin to TalkTalk

I've lost track of telecoms these days.

Nephew has Virgin phone/broadband service that costs him around £25 per month. He's talking about mving to TalkTalk because TT phoned him and made him an offer of £29.99 installtion to move (though I note on TT's website that this is free at the moment). I told him that to get from Virgin to TT he'd have to activate his BT line and that would incur an activation/installation charge and a minimum period with BT on 12 months I think?

Or have things changed now?

If it's Cable based broadband, then he'll need his BT line turned on however TT now do their own phone line too.

I think it's cable and talking to him earlier he seemed to be under the impression that there was another line, a BT line in the house.

Anyway, are you saying that TT can and will now install lines? If so, do you know what the charge is?

    Taken from TT's website.

Huge savings - getting a new line from us is just £69.99 (that's 50% cheaper than BT when you choose Essentials)
We manage the Process - one initial call is all it takes and in many cases our engineer won't even need to visit your home.

Ah yes I've just had a look at TT's website. I can see that they would charge him £69.99 to instal an exchange line. That would be better than paying BT to reactivate his existing line and then having to suffer the BT minimum contract period.

That brings another interesting point. Normally to migrate broadband you need to obtain the MAC from your existing provider. But given that the TT exchange line would be an additional one, then surely there would be no MAc required in order for TT to instal the broadband service?
  • No, he won't need a MAC code. However before even looking at a possible migration, put his postcode into the broadband checker at thinkbroadband.com and see 1. whether broadband can be supplied down the phone line at that address and 2. if so what maximum speed it might run at.

If he only has, say, the 10Mbps Virgin package, he'll be pretty disappointed if after paying for a line to be set up the fastest likely speed it will run at is 1/20th of that.

Yes, good point. I have TT and when at his place I havent noticed that his Virgin internet is any faster/slower than mine is. I'm happy enough with the speeds on mine.

The phone and broadband package will only be £6.99 if he is on a TT LLU exchange, otherwise much higher. Check on https://www.samknows.com, exchange search.

But he will need to add the line rental onto that figure I guess?

It's not so much the use of the internet for browsing/emailing that you would notice the speed difference - it's downloading stuff where you would notice the difference so it depends on how much he does that.

ADSL does bring in other problems such as distance from exchange, noise on line, internal wiring but most of these can be overcome.
