The sale is definitely starting on Thurs 20th July. It has been put back so late as it won't be on for long this summer as there is not as much stock to go in it as in previous years.
Usual departments will be going into the sale: ladieswear, menswear, kidwear, lingerie, home.
Further reductions to come in about 10 days.

This is true sale will start on Thursday 20th July. But from what i have heard after 10days all sale stock left will be getting shiped out to the outlet stores and therefore there will not be the drastic reductions as seen before

I usually pop into the M&S sale in the 1st few days of it starting, then I tend to go back after they have done the 1st set of reductions and make purchases then. This time if there is something that I want/need then I intend to get it there and then this year.

This of course depends on what your local store is usually like in the sale but there are a couple of things I have my eye on.

if it is anything like a store i know there will be loads going into the sale. but you can usualy work out what is going in before the sale actually starts

Nice of them to take away the free delivery code! Never mind, a few bargains. I found a few things reduced which are still in the normal sections, not in the sale, so have a look there if you have time.
