I looked at the NoScript add on. How does this work?

It runs as an addon to Firefox , and when you visit a site with Javascript it will not run the script until you tell noscript to allow that site, it stops unwanted scripts on drive by , having allowed the script you can always turn it back off.
It has been "called tedious" by some on this forum, and others swear by it.
In the first few days you have a lot of telling it what you want but hey do you want to do that just let anyold script run.

I installed Spybot S&D with the Teatimer activated on OH's computer, it pops up a prompt if a lesser-known program tries to change the registry and during installs of new things. I always tell her to 'Deny' any changes in absence, I only 'Allow' them when I'm in the middle of an install of something.

    Thanks for that info.

Have been having a read thro some other posts, and see Avast seems popular and also there is something called Eraser. How do you rate these?

Having always relied on mcaffee, i'm not to gemmed up on what is essential, and all the different jargon that goes with internet security.

One other thing, i alternate between logging online via my AOL account and IE. Are there any different security issues regarding going online via different channels?

Am really sorry for appearing abit thick....but get baffled by it all.

avast + windows firewall + built in Nat firewall in your router will be fine
I have been running my systems in this way for years never had a problem

    use firefox instead of IE
scan for malware every now and then with spybot or a program like this.

download ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ and run it every now and then to clean out internet temp files (i also use the registry scanner part to clean out old registry entries that al no longer needed )

and defrag the harddrive every now and then
