Slow and annoying Philips Freevents

Hello,

First may i apologise if this is covered else where.

I have a philips freevents computer -intel core 2 duo processor with windows vista running on it. I use mcaffee security suite.

Whenever we turn computer on, the virus scannner always starts up and seems to slow things down considerably. Then windows defender starts up too occasionally. Now i know i need scans doing, but do they have to run everytime i turn on computer?? Then to top it off, just recently windows seems to have an awful lot of updates....again slowing my machine down.

I have also noticed that the signal from my wireless router seems to have worsened over recent months, so watching things on for example You Tube are painful to say the least!!

I am more of a computer user not a computer whizz so please be gentle, I do realise these scans need doing but everyday? And is there another way to help speed things up abit?

Thanks in advance.

Personally I would uninstall mcaffee security suite and use Microsoft Security Essentials . Windows defender will then be disabled automatically as it is no longer required.

Mcaffee is awful and a known resource hog whereas MSE is the opposite.

If you do decide to try this ,make sure you follow these instructions for Mcaffee removal.

As long as you have Mcaffee disc you can easily reinstall if above does not improve things.
  • So will this provide adequate protection? Have had a look and it looks comprehensive.

Should be fine. Ensure windows firewall is on.
  • Thanks for that info.

Have been having a read thro some other posts, and see Avast seems popular and also there is something called Eraser. How do you rate these?

Having always relied on mcaffee, i'm not to gemmed up on what is essential, and all the different jargon that goes with internet security.

One other thing, i alternate between logging online via my AOL account and IE. Are there any different security issues regarding going online via different channels?

Am really sorry for appearing abit thick....but get baffled by it all.

  • As previous poster, bin off mcafee.

You have no need for Eraser

Avast is fine if you prefer though you may still need Defender then

    Any browser will be protected
  • Just want to say thanks to you guys. Not only are things running bit faster now, but I've been given a refund of £52 from Mcafee.

I have unistalled mcafee as instructed, downloaded Malwarebytes, done a scan, all seems good, then downloaded MSE and done another scan, again all seems good.

Why didn't i do this before?

My final question is - Are there any other pieces of advice to keep computer clear and how often do you recommend performing scans?

  • Is windows firewall sufficient?? Or shall i download a different firewall?

IMO it should be fine , regularly scan with Malwarebytes +/- Spybot should be ok , I prefer Firefox with Noscript (and also Adblock) but that is my choice of browser, everyone has their own favourite :D

  • I looked at the NoScript add on. How does this work?
