Just a quick warning. I've been through three of these drives in the last year; one blew a chip, and two developed physical disk errors. I *think* it might've been down to poor cooling in my old case, which I've since changed to a Thermaltake Tenor. I'm putting the RMAd drives back in the new box with some temporary data (downloads and stuff) on to see how these ones last.

Maxtor *are* very good with their RMAs and will send out a new drive within a week, giving you 30 days to return the old drive in the same box.

Personally, I rate Maxtor stuff. I have a One Touch 2 300 gb external drive, and the only problem I had with that was when I inadvertently pulled out the power cord while it was still on. Other than that it's been class...

To be honest I had a very bad experience with Maxtor.
Brand new 300 GB HD failed within days of being bought. I had to send it off to their center in Ireland at my own expense (ireland costs as mainland Europe, NOT as UK). And they were extremly picky on the instructions. I lost 3 hours just to run their own HD check program, find the fault number, inert it, get an RMA, then pack the HD with their very difficult instructions etc.
The sending alone cost 10 pounds, which was 15% of the value of the HD. Yes, they replaced it, but certainly I was not happy with this whole waste of time and extra expenses, which I find totally unfair (if the drive fails why should the customer pay to send it back and not even with a UK postal tariff!!!).

Since then I will not touch Maxtor anymore.
