First Direct - Overdraft

Does anyone know how first direct work when it comes to applying for an overdraft. I opened an account in January, and this month asked for a £250 overdraft which was agreed (they did not do a credit check).

If I ask them to increase this to £1000, will they credit check me?

  • I am not sure but think that it is too soon to ask them to increase your overdraft from 250 pounds to 1000 pounds after only one month.
  • I bank with FD amongst others, and have had no problem increasing my overdraft at any time in the past when i have needed it.

I guess it depends on account conduct and how much is going through etc, etc.

When i originally opened the account several years ago i started off with a £5000 overdraft straight away, although i have no use for it now, i am continually told i can have up to £15,000 should i need it,which i dont need, however, nice to know its their should i need it.

How long have you had the FD account ?

    2 months. :d
  • Just bear in mind you will be charged £25 to increase the overdraft unless you wait 6 months.

Did they not give you the standard £500 OD when you opened the account??

No, I applied and asked for no overdraft, then rang asked asked for £250 as I realized it was interest free. Anyway, I just sent them a message on internet banking asking them to increase it to £500.

Won't they hit you with a £25 charge now though??

I put in the message 'As I did not take the full £500 as standard and have just opened my account, please could you waiver the fee'... if they don't, I do not mind paying.
