Purchasing a new car. Couple of questions before signing.

I'm going to buy a new car tomorrow. Not sure yet whether I can make it to the dealers or will have to do it over the phone.
I have a couple of questions about the process of ordering a car.

I presume I will have to sign a contract when ordering it. Do you get them to write down the negotiated freebies to ensure they can't go back on their word? Over the phone they have agreed to a full tank of diesel and the most expensive mats available. Do you need to specifically state on the contract these details to make sure they don't just try and give you the generic mats and half a tank of diesel?

Is there some kind of checklist when collecting a new car? I presume you don't have to worry as much as when buying used but is there anything to look out for on collection?

Anything that would cost you or them money needs to be in the contract (in my view). Six months ago I would have said trust them, but not now.

It will be an addendum (probably has a space) to what I presume will be a fairly standard form.
  • The contract should state exactly what you are expecting to receive - if its not on the contract you cant argue if you dont get it

To be honest I'd look for a lot of the same things, a lot of new cars are mistreated between manufacture and delivery.

One of the sillier sounding things to look for is that the two number plates match :rotfl:

I was nervous of buying via a broker when we got our new car but Im so pleased we did as we got an extremely good price and it was delivered to the door and our old car taken away - the plus being it was classed as distance buying so we were in a better position legally than if we had bought locally and went to pick it up. Something worth thinking about.

They should give you a list of all the stuff you are getting.

I have bought a used car today (58 plate), I trust my dealer as he sold me my previous used car. To save me time he did all the finance over the phone, I saw the car I wanted online at 1pm and phoned him. Went for a test drive at 2.30pm and had signed the paperwork by 3pm.

I have paperwork stating 6 months road tax but a verbal agreement on the rest of the extras and I know he will deliver on them.

I don't have a checklist, it was an impulse buy but an absolute bargain.

I did buy a new car before the one I have now and didn't have a checklist - another impulse buy and I trusted the dealer. Haven't been let down yet.
