Picking up brand new car at the weekend, what to check before handing over cheque?

Options
Hi,
I'm picking up a new Land Rover from a main dealer at the weekend and trading in my old car. I've never bought a brand new car before so trying to be preparred (the dealer is a long distance away, but I get a v. good discount).

Apart from the obvious (looking for any dents or scratches) what else should I be looking for? Is it considered OK to test drive a brand new car before parting with the cheque (hope so!).

Any suggestions appreciated!

Mike

  • Hi Mike, if it's a main dealer then i wouldn't be worried about the test drive, maybe leave enough time once you've picked the car up to drive around the area for a bit just so you're happy before you head off home. Dependent on the dealer there may be a checklist if not create one for yourself covering all the points that are important, full documents, service book, reciepts, warrenty information etc. Don't let them rush you if you're not familiar with the model ask them to take you through all the controls and make sure you know how to open the petrol cap and bonnet!! You can't beat the smell of a brand new car....Happy motoring

Make sure that you've got all the extras you ordered. One of my colleagues once had an Espace delivered without the sunroof or alloys:D .

As it was a company lease car he took it anyway. The dealer swapped the alloys off one in the showroom:rolleyes: .

Incidentally, which model are you getting?

Whenever I make an appointment to collect a new car I always turn up early. If the salesman is busy then so much the better as I ask him for the keys so that I can check and put the seats and mirrors in the right position and familiarise myself with the controls. Then I check the car for damage. I normally take my brother as it's better to have 2 pairs of critical eyes.

  • Make sure you have all the handbooks and service books. Check the tax disc is on the windscren and is for the correct car (they have been known to get them mixed up if several cars are going out the same day).

Check the spare wheel is present (is it the correct one?) and that there is a jack and wheel brace, etc.

Did they promise a full tank of fuel, if so make sure it's in the tank.

    Enjoy.

If there is a local car hire company to you be cheeky and ask them for one of their vehicle check forms, take that with you, then note all defects(scratches etc) write down the mileage, then get the dealer to sign it,that way it lessens the chance of arguments,

A good dealer will if you ask take you out for a test/familirisation drive so you can get used to all the controls

  • Also ask if you can see how they've applied to the DVLA for your registration document...to ensure they've got the correct name and address for you so the V5 will arrive with you correctly worded.

You'd be surpirsed how many dealer admin' staff have the occasional 'dizzy day' and corrections to V5 wording have to be made via the DVLA.

Check you have any audio kit security codes too.
