  • Im sorry but it really doesn't pay to be honest in this type of case. The long term hassle you will get from the benefit agencies should you declare the £100 will be amazing.
I would suggest that 'if asked' directly by the BA if you have received any monies and as l suspect you are not an untruthful person you could consider saying apart from money for Birthday/Xmas/Easter then no you haven't.
Who can prove you received the money, it was in cash so therefore not traceable
  • Could I just explain that maintenace paid for children is disregarded in full for Local Housing Allowance. The £20 disregard, does not apply for LHA.
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

my ex partner and i split around 9 months ago and since then he has paid nothing toward our 2 children. He hasnt seen them in a while now.Yesterday he put an envelope through my door with £100 in it.Dont know what to do now,I get income support, housing benefit,i dont work as the children are 2 and 6 months.DO i have to declare this money,i assume i do but am worried as i dont receive regular money from him i cannot afford for to lose benefits.I did ask him at the start to pay me a regular payment even if it was only as small amount so i could do everything properly.Any advice please.
Personally i would declare this money as it will not affect your benefits at all, £20 a week child support for 5 weeks. Tell IS that this was a one off payment it is not regular but if you do get any further payment you will contact them as and when.

Best to declare anything so nothing can come back and bite you on the bum ;) No point in starting to be dishonest now is there?
    *SIGH*

So are you saying that it will affect my housing benefit/council tax.Sorry just a bit confused, never had to claim benefits until he left and really dont have much clue.Im starting to wish he hadnt even bothered putting the money through the door now, seems like alot of trouble.

What is being said is that child maintenance is now disregarded in full for Housing and Council Tax Benefit (and LHA).

The £20pw disregard refers to your Income Support. The DWP will not necessarily presume that the money covers 5 weeks as there is no reason to.
  • Ok,thanks i understand.I think i will be giving the money back to his mum and she can pass it back on to him.I dont feel comfortable with this at all.If he really wants to contribute it will have to be more regular,as i asked him to do,but dont think he does want to help anyway .i have no idea why he has done this now, hopefully he will take the money and go and crawl back under his rock.
