Water Meter Savings...

Options
Hi!

I have had a water meter put in about 20 months ago and it has definitely saved me money. I live in a flat. Single guy. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to save even more money by reducing the water usage?

Flushing the toilet once a day? etc?

We've saved quite a bit of money too with the water meter.
Try putting a hippo in the toilet as it'll use less water when you flush....

Before you buy one please please ask your water company..most give them away for free.

Yes.. flush once if you wish.

We use nearly a third of what was used by the previous occupant. The last water bill was for 15 units for us two compared to their 42.5 for two people.

On my own I used just 1 unit in the previous billing period. When I took a shower I put the plug in the bath and washed socks and rinsed dirty clothes. I didn't have a cooker that worked well so I microwaved a dinner in one or two bowls or on the plate which reduced the amount of washing up to be done daily and saved water by using a bowl in the sink. I also used rainwater heated in a pan on the top of the Rayburn for washing paintwork and floors.

I'd say if unheated rainwater will do to water houseplants, rinse windows outside after cleaning, in the garden or to wash the car then use that.

I always fill the washing machine up to do a full load and choose an eco setting that uses less water and fewest rinses wherever possible. If you don't use excess washing powder or liquid there isn't excess soap that will needing rinsing.

We have started to use rainwater to flush the toilet and I've filled a washing up liquid bottle with water to take up space in the cistern so it takes less water to refill. It's a faff to take the cistern lid off and hold the ballcock up to refill with rainwater but I'm enjoying the novelty value and knowing that it's not costing us anything but time.

If I could hook the toilet up to a tank that catches rain off the roof I'd do that but I haven't found a suitable gardening rainwater diverter to fit our downpipe yet. I'd hook the washing machine up as well if I could filter the water.

If you went to a gymn / leisure centre swimming etc could you get a shower there?

I'm stumped for any more ideas!

However, even if you reduce your water useage to zero, there still remains the (not so) small matter of standing charges. Another tip: if your rainwater drains into a soakaway, rather than the mains, then it should be possible to negotiate a reduction in sewage charges.
