No sound even with new speakers?

Hi,

This is my first post but my mum uses mse all the time and says if I want to know anything then here is the place to find an answer. I'd appreciate any help, thanks.

I have a quite old packard bell I xtreme pc, running windows xp. I can't get any sound to work?! I have bought new speakers but that makes no difference.

The original speakers had a purple jack which was plugged in next to the main power in socket (as opposed to down next to mic in etc) I can't find any new speakers that have that sort of jack? My new speakers have mains power with a normal jack which I have plugged in in the green out point? (sorry for my inadequate description)
Device manager doesn't show any errors,
What can I try?
Thank you in advance for any help,
Daryl

  • hi daryl and welcome to the site.

first off, if you run windows media player, does it play audio files as if theres no problem? if it couldnt detect a sound card then it should complain straight away.

do you know what the audio device is? are you confident enough to try removing the audio device and re-install the sound drivers?

Thanks for taking the time to reply to me,

Yes it plays windows media, appearing to work fine just no sound.

I'm not sure where I find the type of audio device your talking about, can you tell me where to look?

    Thanks again,

When I go into the control panel >sounds audio devices> soundplay back is SIGMA TEL AUDIO.
Is this what you wondered about?
  • do you have any serial numbers for the pc that you could put into packard bells website?

that way you should be able to find out what device is in your pc.

    Hi,

I did that and it doesn't seem to have helped, except it does have a picture of the old speakers on it!
    It says Mutimedia Components
two-piece multi media speaker speaker system
    Does this help?

    Hi,
Volume definately turned up... I did think of that but actually questioned whether I'd checked properly.

  • Hi Daryl and welcome to MSE. The purple jack on your old speakers was for power, supplied by the PC. This is not needed with the new speakers.
Although the volume is turned up, it may still be turned down or muted through the mixer. Double click on the speaker icon in the taskbar (bottom right) to bring up the mixer.
Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!

i used to have a packard bell ixtreme and i remember that old purple power lead.

    just check this as well:

    1. Open Control Panel
    2. Open "Sounds and Multimedia Properties" or "Sounds and Audio Devices"
    3. Click the "Audio" tab
    4. In the Audio tab click the "Advanced" button under "Sound Playback."
    5. In the Advanced Audio Properties window try setting it to "Desktop Stereo Speakers" option.
i'm not running XP now, so i can't remember if those instructions are exactly right.

if you have some headphones with the right jack, you could try connecting those instead of the speakers to check for sound.

sound can be enabled in the BIOS on those models if i remember, but I would have thought it already was, if it's showing up in device manager.
