  • try right clicking in the search bar, second option from the bottom should be clear search history.
If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.
  • Ahhh this is not THE google toolbar , me thinks that this is the IE search bar at the right of the address bar (the red X gives it away I think). I don't use IE much but I will have a look at this in a while.

hi, i think you're right ........i've got IE8 - no matter what i do all the history/sites i've been on remains in the search bar............i'd love any helpxxxxxxxxxx

Tried yesterday with IE and I can't get it to delete them either, same goes for Firefox too, I tried disabling suggestions too, all that does is what it says on the tin, I cannot see a way of deleting the search bar history ... yet:o Someone may know the answer. Still its not as bad as cookies, site history, passwords etc, just annoying that it seems impossible.:D

I've just done it following advice from other MSE'rs:

    Go to Tools

    Options

    Privacy(in box along the top)

    Location bar (at bottom)

    Set to 'nothing'

    Press OK

    Done!

Done (you have been) that is for Firefox only, and it does not apply to the search box it is for URL (address bar only) ... nice try but I tried that yesterday. It seems that nothing thus far clears out the search bar stuff unless others know better
Edit: cannot clear for IE either, that the OP uses.

    If it is address bar

    Click on Start, then Run.
Type regedit in the box provided.
In Regedit navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Typed URLs
Then just delete all of the keys that list the URL's you no longer want to see.
Note: Clearing the recent documents history from start menu properties will clear this list as well.

Just as a matter of interest, Google keep their own history of your searches for their own (marketing?) purposes. If you're really concerned about your privacy then try Googling for "google search history privacy" and read some of the comments there.

Microsoft do something similar. Deleting your search history etc. via Internet Explorer will NOT clear out the history they keep hidden in the 'index.dat' files they maintain for their own unspecified purposes - you need to use CCleaner or similar to do that.

Hi Dogmary, sadly the OP wants to clear the search bar bits not the Address Bar, It appears that there is no option for doing this with IE (nor for FF as far as I can tell) Cant see anything in the registry for it either weird but true. I have just about given up :o
