Start with finding out whether you have CUPS on the notebook. Type
http://localhost:631
in the address bar of your browser.
What Linux distribution do you have?0 -
The Linux is almost certainly Linpus Lite.
First of all, go here and follow the commands to enable easy access to the desktop menu, if you haven't already done so.
The right click and a menu comes up. Choose system and add/remove software.
It will ask for your root password so enter it if you have one or just return.
The next bit is had work for the little Atom chip so give it time.
Click on Search
Then type in gutenprint.
I think you need them all except the GIMP ones
Go back to the desktop (the home key where the windows one is on a windows machine)
Right click, settings, printing, and add your printer.
Mine is a PIXMA IX4000 which is not in the version of gutenprint that comes with the machine but a new version was launched a month after I bought it which does have it and I downloaded and installed that, although I have to tell it that this is an IX5000.
Also, look here for lots of help with Aspire ones.0 -

Thanks Magpiecottage but cannot get past the bit requiring the root password.
I do not have one, and cannot just "return" through it as you suggest - any other ideas??
Many thanks in anticipation.0 -

you should always password protect the root account as it is just like the administrator account in windows0 -
I have tried the "enter" button but cannot get past the root password - any other ideas??0

Anything else to try??0 -

"Browser" - the software you used to write and send your posts to this forum.
"address bar" - the bit a little bit lower than the top of the page. It will have http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/ in it. Delete everything in that space. Replace with:
http://localhost:631
Press return. Report what you see.Anything else to try??0 -
The distro on the AAO is pretty much guaranteed to be Linpus Lite unless the OP has changed it.
The root password was set when you used the AAO the first time. But you can change it to something you'll remember for the future. Open a terminal and type "sudo -su". When it prompts you for a password enter "passwd" and then follow the instructions to change the password.
However, I don't remember ever having to install printer drivers manually. Have you run the live update to make sure everything is up to date?0 -
I am getting -
"Common Unix Printing System 1.3.3
OK - what now, please?0
