The root password was set when you used the AAO the first time. But you can change it to something you'll remember for the future. Open a terminal and type "sudo -su". When it prompts you for a password enter "passwd" and then follow the instructions to change the password.
However, I don't remember ever having to install printer drivers manually. Have you run the live update to make sure everything is up to date?
Unless I am being thick, and believe me that is possible, I cannot get the prompt to change the password from the sudo-su you are suggesting.
What am I doing wrong?
When you say you did not need to install drivers, how did you get the printing to work then??0 -
I am getting -
"Common Unix Printing System 1.3.3
You have a tab on that page - "Administration".
Click on it. Click on "Find New Printers". Report what the display says.OK - what now, please?0 -

Well, for me it's bedtime and I'm on a promise. For you - if the display tells you what printers are available on the network you're nearly there. If not, finding out about samba might be a priority.
On the CUPS website, the answer to my question on printers is "No printers found"
The more I have read on SAMBA the more confused I am!!
All I am trying to do is print from my Acer One Aspire - any more from Scottishblondie on getting through the root password?

Help please?
You first need to set up the Windows machine to share the printer. Then communicate with it from the Acer either directly or via Samba using "Add Printer" in the CUPS Administration interface.

may help.
At some point you'll need the root password.0 -

sudo su
Note the space and no "-".sudo passwd root
may work; it depends on how sudo is configured on your machine.
OK - got there eventually! Have now installed gutenprint through the Package Manager and am now attempting to install the printer.
Any more tips?0 -
