Cam Belt gone on Megane £1500 repair costs
Options
The car has broken down!! :mad:Renault have said it my cam belt and it will cost £1500 to fix. Also need a new car key £200.
A local independant doesn't seem much cheaper.
The car is a 2003 so worth about £2500?
Does this price sound right?
Is there anyone that would by my car for say £1000, in a broken state so I could just cut my losses and buy a new one.
I don't think there will be, but it doesn't hurt to ask!!

A colleague's daughter has just paid £550 for this work on Scenic. The water pump went taking out the cambelt (a stupid design shared by many manufacturers). The problem you have is until it is stripped down you may not know the full extent of the damage.0

Its been at Renault and they've said something about engine valves being knocked.
I've just had a look on ebay and a megane had sold for £1000 with a cam belt probem. Is this realistic?0 -
I suggest you get the car taken to a small local mechanic and rather than get your current engine rebuilt which could be very costly just buy a good 2nd hand engine and have that fitted. The cost will be significantly cheaper than £1500.
try a firm called renault specialists in accrington for an engine.0 -
agree find a smaller garage is always cheaper to fit fit a recon head (if pistons r ok) heads circa £500 plus labour parts and gaskets £800-£1000.
but ask yourself is the car good condition low miles and so on if yes then fix it
as for the key prob ,maybe just needs a recode cost around £400 -
Thanks for all replies. I will look into that0

A friend of mine had to pay Peugeot £3000 to fix his Peugeot 306 Gti-6 back in 2004 when he was on holiday in Wales. He took Peugeot to court as it had only done 35K miles and they had stated that cam belts on this engine are good up to 50K miles. He won the case and got £3000 compensation to pay for the cam belt so got it done for free. Unjustly Peugeot still managed to legally bill him for the court costs which were..........£3000!!
I'm surprised Peugeot are still in business considering the low quality and fragile builds they have put out over the last 10 years!0 -

Thing is if he knew what he was doing with his GTI6 he would know that they are prone to going which is why the 306GTi6 drivers club recommend 30k cambelt changes.0 -
These cambelts are a pain in !!!, thats why I like my chain driven motor...
But as already said get it to an independent, assuming because of the age its a 16v which means you could potentially have 16 valves to replace. This can also lead to further damage. Might be worth, if you want to keep the car, getting a new engine dropped in...0
