in IVA & DRO
I've just been watching Beat the Bailiff on ITV3 where they have a rep from payplan go in and advise the person on it of their debt options.
The person today had somewhere between 14-20k debt and less that £50 disposable income. He had no assets either and his car was worth under £500.
Yet Payplan said that his options were Bankruptcy or IVA, but an IVA would probably not be accepted by his creditors due to his poor repayment history.
Am I missing something?? How the hell would an IVA be appropriate for that guy??

oh dont get me started on the programm, the misinformation bears little resemblance to reality.
No an IVA would probably not be an option - call me cycical but payplan would advise for a reason...not necessarily the right reason:cool:

As said earlier, that is the sort of thing that has made me very wary of PP now. :undecidedFree/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Hi all,
Dealing with bailiffs can be distressing, whatever the issue.
Here's a useful link to an excellent user-friendly guide:

Hope this can be of some help.

I think it has more to do with "control" and "censorship".
As in, if the general public really knew how "simple" (as in compared to other debt options like an IVA) bankruptcy really was, there would be even more people doing it.
Plus, I have noticed on those programs that what they do has little bearing on reality and the law. Again, it almost smacks of not wanting the public to be aware of their rights and just how much control they do have in paying/not paying debts.

Now this problem winds me right up. That host who also seems to uselessly present a program on antiques(not sure how she has expertese in both subjects but thats the bbc). I just find it all so patronising, the idea that all people in debt lived a life of luxury is so wrong. And surely bayliffs cant really come in and help themselves. I know personally ive only just started doing something about my debt after realising that nothing bad is going to happen to me. Sure my credit record with be ruined for a few years regardless of which route I go but I wont go to prison or they wont reposes my mums house and ruin the whole familys credit records(amazing how people get ideas from the media/tv etc). As a man with no assets the worst thing that can happen is I go bankrupt and start a fresh where I thought there was no way out.0
