How long for DLA decision?

My partner applied for DLA 7 weeks ago. What is the average waiting time for a decision to be made? My partner was receiving the equivalent when she lived in Australia so we thought the process would be quite straight forward.

She remains patient! :)

  • mine took 9 weeks i was all ready with guns blazing expecting them to refuse it but they awarded mine hope you hear soon
  • usually takes about 12 weeks,if you have heard nothing after 10 weeks phone them
  • Just this morning my partner received a letter telling her that she will receive a visit from a Health Care Professional for a medical examination to assist them in deciding her entitlement to DLA.

So . . . . how best to prepare? What kind of examination can she expect? We realise that its purpose is to look at how her medical conditions (she has a list!) affect her everyday activities.

Anyone's experiences will be interesting and informative.
  • it usually consist of whoever they send asking questions, they will then make a report to the dla dm(decision maker)who will then make a decision, usually the send someone out to visit when the application hasnt given enough detail or the gp report is unclear.

    Hi roseygrech
When I had my medical 3 the Doctor ask me about my needs, medication, what I am able to do and what I am not able to do and the things that others need to do to help me. Also what home improvement I have made to help me like second Stair rail, Grab handles in Bath and so on. He was professionally friendly. He also took my blood pressure and did a physical examination. I received already HRM indefinite and my appeal was for the care component. The results came 2 weeks later......HRM indefinite and HRC until 10/2011.

Did they have the medical and how did it go?

My OH applied and they recieved his application on 2nd Feb and last week he got a letter from ATOS about a medical and have not heard anything more since and wondered if since they sent that they recieved his doctors report or they still want to see him.

It did say on the notes that it usually takes 40 working days to process and by my reckoning the last day for this will be 29th March.

Not sure whether to chase it up or leave it another week to see what's happening.

And in between time my OH will have had an appointment with the rhuematologist (excuse spelling if I've not spelt it correctly).

Not sure if this is relevant but will they also cross ref his ESA50 form with the DLA form and doctors form that has been filled in.

    Another update . . . . . .

15 March - the doctor came to see my partner, everything was straight forward, lots of questions which were answered honestly, and a few little tests.

25 March - decision letter arrived - flatly turning down my partner's claim! Everything she cannot do without help, difficulty or pain they say she can do - almost as if they are saying she is an out and out liar.

26 March - phoned DWP to ask for a reconsideration and also arranged for an appointment with our CAB after Easter to help with an appeal.

My partner is totally despondent - which is all 'helping' with her depression of course, but she knows we have to push on for the reconsideration and an appeal.

How they can just turn round and completely discount everything we explain [in detail] to them is beyond belief.

Usually by asking for the decision to be reviewed can just be the push they need, they did this to me 2 claims ago, went from High Rate Mobility, Low Care to zilch - after ringing and asking about appeal process, 2 weeks later had a letter saying it had been reawarded back to me. I have to claim again nxt yr..Not looking forward to that.

Tell your partner it's not necessarily as hopeless as it looks!
When I applied (with help from DIAL) I was refused too. The reasons they gave read as if they were refering to a different person!
We asked for a reconsideration, they did this and still refused me.
So DIAL handled my appeal. The result was that I was awarded DLA Care and Mobility, bith lower rate and both indefinite awards.
If you read through this forum you'll find plenty of other people who have similar experiences.
