    Thanks everyone!

But in a typical sod's law way the Pentax E80 isn't reviewed on any of those sites! ;)
  • I'd like to hear why anyone things it is or whats so magical about an SLR other than its mirror config

Apart from the lens quality, the larger sensors, the ability to set the shot as you desire, shot bracketing, iso sensitivity and availability of after market flashes ?

On the flip side, the main item impacting images is the taker :)
  • I mean magical about it's ability to shoot faster. I'm not going to dispute the greater level of creativity and quality offered by an SLR.

My dSLR still has to move a motor to focus the lens, it still has to process the data (more of it since its a larger sensor), still has to shunt the data from the cache to the SD card. The only real way to speed up the photo taking is to move onto manual focus (which i do tend to, but just so i can use my old OM lenses).

Oh yes, and if you buy a Panasonic LX3 or a Canon G11 you can do practically everything from your list (other than swap lenses)

    Update!! & New Question? :D

I decided to take the plunge  and buy the Pentax E80 which came today, seems a nice little camera very sleek looking and easy to handle and operate.

As I said before the main reason I wanted one was for it to take the actual photo quicker and be ready to take another one quicker, it does this which I am pleased with and it also switches on and is ready to take a photo really quickly which is great.

However......so far I don't like the photos I have taken as much as I did with the ones on my old camera......I'm not sure if it's just a case of getting used to them looking different? :(

My old camera was a 5mp and new one is 10mp but to be honest I can't see that much difference in the sharpness of the photo. The photos on my old camera look more natural in a brighter, warmer "true" way (if that makes sense?!?!) where as the new camera photos look more cold & "fake" not as "real"?

I tend to take most photos on Auto :o as I am complete novice and never really messed around much with the settings on my last camera.

So I was wondering can someone who knows more about digital cameras help with my question?

Are there any settings that I can change on the camera to make the photos look more natural & real or is it just the way it is and that different cameras take different "looking" photos (IYKWIM) so I am stuck with it and will have to like it or lump it!?!? :rotfl:

    Thanks!
  • Sounds like you need to adjust the white balance on the new camera.. that effects the balance of 'blue vs orange' on your camera. You normally adjust this if you're taking photos indoors vs outdoors (or under incandescent lighting)

More megapixels shouldn't make a photo sharper either

    Thanks ringo!

I have just searched through the instruction manual on the cd that came with the camera and the only reference I can find to white balance is in the appendix where it has some technical specs and it says: White balance - Auto.

So I guess that means I can't change this aspect of the camera?

Are there any other settings I can change to make the photos look more natural?
  • If you download Google Picassa, it can change the warmth/coolness (i.e. white balance) and it has an automatic mode.
