A "heads up".
A friend of mine just fired up a little used XP SP1 laptop and received notification, from M$, that effective 10th October 2006 "Windows service pack 1 will transition to a non-supported status. Upgrade to SP2 now continued updates and incident support."
Not sure what this will mean. Particularly when we tell people we won't fix their unpatched HJT logs until they've "upgraded" to SP1. Hopefully SP1 will still be available for those cases. SP2 won't install on infected computers and there's absolutely no point fixing up a computer without updating the SPs.
Time will tell, I guess.

Thanks dooby but the crux of my thoughts centred round the second paragraph ... the impact on trying to fix HJT logs.0

Just install sp2 and then collect the 2 and a bit years of updates they lack.0 -
If your computer is fine & clean, free from infections, then OK ... upgrade. Of course.
However, like I say .... SP2 won't install correctly (often not at all) on unpatched/infected machines. That's why we tell people to upgrade to SP1a before we start fixing up the HJT log.0 -

If running it from the your hd (sp2) update then do msconfig via start click services check hide all microsoft services and apply, then click startup tab abd disable all apply then reboot and then install sp2 update, reboot and msconfig enable all you disabelled reboot and it should work o.k.0 -
Looks like SP1 will still be available from the M$ website. It's just that they won't help out with it.
Just for safety, ln another site where I'm involved, we have decided to download and host a copy there. At least then, if M$ does pull the plug, we still have a usuable copy.0 -

Excuse me?
I have a 100% genuine version of Windows XP and prefer to leave it without any service packs, the way it was shipped to me in 2001.
If you use a decent firewall and know how to manage a computer then there's no real reason you need SP1/2, unless you have software that will not install/run without it (usually MS stuff, which can be avoided).0 -

You stick being one of the many users that spread infections, become zombie machines that do multiple dns attacks.
Are'nt we the smart one!
Service packs are there for a reason, you don't want them then use windows Me.0 -

Actually no, you see I have at least half a brain and know what to avoid whilst using a computer, and how to manage security.
I have never suffered any type of attack, never been infected with any type of virus and spyware is at a minimum at all times.
Stick that up your service pack mate.0 -
Just like to point out that MS ended support totally for Me and 98 last Tuesday. That means no Critical updates, no regular updates, nothing new in terms of updates at all coming from them, ever.
If you want to encourage the spread of all the nasties, then Me is certainly the way to go!0
