take a mate and tow it home! i dont know wheather the law on tax still aplies when towing a vehicle, but as long as its insured cant see no problem,
write down the policy number when insured if your stopped youll have the purchase reciept to prove you just bought it wip off the white marker on the windscreen for full visability and documents mot license etc.

Still needs to be taxed to be on the road, bad advice.

cheers for the point out inactive.

OP my advice would be to try and bid on one that has some tax left on it and mot, when won you could insure it staright away takeing note of the policy number if stopped on the way home the police can check with your insurer against the policy number, either that is to pay a bit extra to have it delivered.

buy private or dealer too many knackers in auctions, there are bound to be loads of good £3k cars closer to home.

If only! Autotrader lists 13 manual estates within 30 miles (trade and private) so not much choice by the time I get rid of those that are too small.

I was hoping that an auction might have a better selection of estates (Mondeo, Laguna, Saab 9-5 or similar)

Laguna???? I feel a head bump inspection may be in order!!

Went to see one recently described as 'immaculate' And it was the top of the range Privilege(?)

With Lagunas there are several things to look out for including:

Any warning lights? - walk away
Windows not working? - walk away
    Sluggish Diesel - walk away...quickly
    No service history? - sprint
    Any electrical gremlins? - Sprint....faster

So that would be business as usual for French car buyers then...

Atrix, on the tax and towing front, I believe the law states it needs to be taxed, insured etc to be towed if it is being towed with its wheels on the road. So if its just with a dolly then it needs everything; on a beavertail it needs nothing.

Well, I've got a large old Citroen at the moment, so a few gremlins don't scare me (too much).:D

Maybe a better list would be Saab 9-5, Mondeo, Mazda 6, Citroen C5 ;)

I think you would be better off buying from Ebay or autotrader or even a local dealer.

On top of the auction price you need to factor in
Auction winners fee (approx 6%) although varies by auction.
Transportation or storage. Auctions charge heavy for deliveries and its hard to get independent delivery on the day as you cant be sure be sure if you will buy or not.
Tax needs to be sorted out.
Car is sold without any chance of a test drive and no comeback if it breaks down a week later so higher risk.

In my experience when I was looking at really specific models with age and milage comparisons the best deals seemed to be ebay or local classified private sales.
