Buying at Auction
If I buy a car at an auction, what is the easiest way to legally get it home?
I'd buy one with some MoT, and I can ring a company and insure it immediately, but how can I tax it? No insurance docs to take to a post office, and it won't be on the MIB database to tax online.
I've got a mate who has got trade plates he may lend me, but I don't think I'd be insured if I used them, as I don't work for him.
From what I here, traffic cops hang around near auctions waiting to get people for no tax / insurance / etc as they know that some risk it.

Pay the auction to deliver it, or pay somebody with a car transporter to collect if for you.0

I think auction houses will let you keep the car there for £20 a day or so until you collect it. So you could leave it there until you tax it?0

That is a common sight at my local ADT auction, they obviously wait outside for vehicles without a tax disc, or with the auction mark still on the front screen.
Basically take the advice of the other posters, and pay the parking fees or have someone transport the car to your address (although you still have the problem there of an untaxed vehicle).0 -
In all my years of buying at auction and visiting auctions, I cant recall ever seeing a police car at or around an auction. Even when my fathers car got broken into parked at an auction, they never appeared.
You can pick it up the next day so why not go to a broker that can give you a cover note on the spot then tax it before picking it up?
Or ask your mate to go with you to pick it up.0 -
Mine are usually knackered so I either borrow a trailer or get it dropped off by transporter.0

I live a long way from any auctions, so collecting next day is pretty difficult (about a 2hr drive each way), which is also the problem for delivery as the costs mount due to the mileage involved. Would be OK if I was looking for an expensive car, but my budget is more around £3k so paying £300 to get it delivered would mean it isn't worth it.
Thanks for the suggestions though! I'm trying to see whether it is a feasible method of buying.0 -
You are probably better off buying private, prices are often less than you will pay at an auction, at least you can test drive a private buy.0

You may be lucky and get a car thats got a tax disc...although sometimes you dont know till you get all papers once youve paid for it. Am thinking of a new one:beer:0

Can you get your mate with the trade plates to pick it up for you? He'll be insured to drive it too I imagine if he has trade cover.0

take a mate and tow it home! i dont know wheather the law on tax still aplies when towing a vehicle, but as long as its insured cant see no problem,
write down the policy number when insured if your stopped youll have the purchase reciept to prove you just bought it wip off the white marker on the windscreen for full visability and documents mot license etc.0
